UI signs deal with MidAmerican Energy UI News Service The University of Iowa and MidAmerican Energy have signed an agreement that will help meet the university's electricity needs through 2008.

Doug True, UI vice president for finance and university services, said a major benefit will be price stability for purchased electricity through the term of the agreement. Currently, the university cogenerates 30 percent of its electric power needs in a combined heat and power plant and purchases the remainder. Under the agreement, the university annually will purchase 200 million kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to supply 20,000 average residential customers for a year. Reliable services, delivered at an economical price, are top priorities for the university utility system, True said. The system supplies steam, electric power, potable water, chilled water for air conditioning, and sewer services to the entire central campus, including University Hospitals (with a 772- bed hospital), residence halls housing about 5,700 students, and computers and other equipment supporting the UI's research activities.

"The contract is structured such that the university is encouraged to manage its energy resources effectively," said Ferman Mister, UI Facilities Services Group associate director of utilities who directs UI power plant operations. "For example, the central plant operators monitor real-time prices for various electric power options that may be available. University operators then make decisions about whether to produce or purchase power based on the most economical mode of operation. Such decisions are based on fuel availability, time of day, and season of the year." PROFESSIONALISM YOU CAN TRUST TERRY GREEN 887-7218 office 621-4200 cell 351-7945 home COLDweLL REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS BANKeR email From 1A Wilkins likely is unaware how close authorities might be, officials said. The arrest doubtfully would have gotten a mention from the Atlanta press, especially with a Thursday double homicide of a suburban housewife and her 14-year-old son.

Parris stressed the escapees are in no way connected to that case. So far, state and federal arrest warrants charge the men with escape and unlawful flight. Additional charges likely. "I think you can expect a combination of state and federal charges and those decisions will be made fairly quickly," Johnson County Attorney J. Patrick White said.

Wilkins and Hershberger were in the Oakdale prison yard during their scheduled recreational period when they climbed two fences and fled the medium-security facility off Highway 965, north of Interstate 80. They carjacked a Ford Taurus in the parking lot and drove to a remote location northwest of North Liberty. There, they robbed a fisherman, forced him into the car's trunk and stole his van. Prison officials have said construction led them to turn off a high-tech fence alarm as long as seven months ago. Measures since have been taken to increase prison security.

A third inmate faces discipline and possible criminal charges for assisting the escape by distracting a correctional officer. It is not known how soon Hershberger will be extradited back to Iowa. "I don't know what to think," his sister said Friday, uncertain whether she would visit him once he returns. "I don't know if I can face him." Protest at ACT CT COnD Speak out! Freedom and die are not tree Press-Citizen Jason A. Cook Steve Townsend walks Friday near ACT in support of his daughter, Sarah, who said she was fired for wearing an anti-war button to work.

"I'm in support of everything her actions stand for," Townsend said. Gift From 3A had his answer. "None of those have a better group of faculty, or a better dean, or better administrative support organization and none of them do a better job of educating students. Iowa is blessed with a wealth of talent." Fethke described Jerre Stead as an "extremely successful" business executive. His spans top-ranking positions at Honeywell, Square Legent Co.

and Ingram Micro Inc. Today, he remains executive chairman of two companies and sits on five other boards of directors. The Steads are natives of Maquoketa and both attended UI. They have contributed to the university for more than 20 years, including gifts to the business school, the UI Alumni Association and Old Capitol totaling about $1 million. "This is something that they've wanted to do," Fethke said of Friday's commitment, "and it will benefit the college greatly going into the future." Police Spencer David Dirks, 19, of Marion, was charged at 1:47 a.m.

Friday with drunken driving near First Avenue and Highway 6. Ervin Monte Jeffries, 19, of Davenport, was charged at 3:20 a.m. Friday with drunken driving along First Avenue. Iowa City police cited seven people with public intoxication Friday. Iowa City police cited two people with possession of alcohol under the legal age at the Union Bar and two people at Vitos.
