Bowa tried for second when the tagging Larry Bowa of Phils in first inning of Thursday 5. Astros'first baseman missed a pickoff throw. By BOB FRANKLIN DaUy Times Spoflji Writer CHESTER-TOO MANY big ones have been getting away, according to new St. James High basketball coach Tom Stewart.

Stewart, a 28-year-old social, studies teacher at St. James, thinks there is no need for the Bulldogs to have a "losing image" in the Catholic League. "We have to become more involved with the CYO program," said Stewart, who has served as assistant to Tony Farneil and Ed Givnish, two former St. James coaches. "There are four or five players from the local CYO league that are going to other schools, who could start for St James," said Stewart, who was a former CYO star at St.

Dorothy's Parish.in Drexel Hill. He cited Donnie Dodds, Jody Squire, Pat Van Horn, Don Jones and, Stefan Roots as five good ones that got away. Squire, Van Horn and Jones all played for Our Lady of Charity and have enrolled at Malvern Prep; Dodds was the CYO's leading scorer for St. Robert's and is expected to start for St. Joseph's Prep next season as a sophomore and Roots, who was one of the best ever for Immaculate Heart, is a sophomore at Archmere Academy.

"We must establish a program from the bottom up," said the Monsignor Bonner and SteubenviUe (Ohio) College graduate. "St. James hasn't been a Catholic League contender for these many -years simply because it hasn't sold the available talent on the idea that St. James'can shake that losing image and. become a winner," said the new coach.

STEWART, who is pool director for the summer at Philadelphia Country Club, had an interesting playing career. "I went out for the Bonner School team at about 4-1C and 120 pounds and got cut when I was a freshmen," he recalled. Disappointed, but nol defeated, Stewart packed up his sneakers and joined the St. Dorothy's team of the CYO League. In his senior year, St.

Dorothy's won the area title'. still wanted to play basketball in college, so I started looking for a small school. I wanted to go to St. Francis of Loretto, but changed my the advice of a friend and went to Steubenville," said Stewart: SteubenviHe" is a a school, but not basketball-wise. In basketball, the attitude there is big time.

In Stewart's freshman and sophomore years, SteubenviHe had 23-1 and 24-2 records, beating powerful Southern Illinois twice each campaign. "I was on the sub varsity those two years and didn't get to play on the varsity at all," said Stewart. was a funny thing. The coach told me that I was good enough to be on the varsity, but that since I didn't have a scholarship, he had to bypass me for players who did have scholarships. "That was wheiijtheygave four year" scholarships.

Now, they give one scholarship, "he said. STEWART says he plans to announce his staff in the next two or three weeks. Melbourne's throw to the uncovered base sailed into the left field foul territory and Bowa continued to home plate.
