Jlr. Charles A. Daoa is tho editor in-chief of that paper and is politically opposed to the President. He was, at the time of tic inauguration of Sir. beliovc) Assistant Secretary of "War.

The statements made in the Sun, in this matter, ought therefore, to be held good evidence in Mr. Johnson's favor, and set at rest the vile accusation that he was intoxicated on that occasion With the extraordinary spectacle presented on the occasion of Mr. Johnson's lauguratiou as Vice President tho world is faimiliar. Our own citizens, fls as the representatives of foreign governments wno were present, looked upon it wish astonishment. But there prevails almost'universally, outside of those who were eye-witness, a mistake a notion of the circumstances of that, event.

According to tlie most trustworthy evidence, Mr. Johnson waa not--as he is generally supposed to Imve been--intoxicated when he took, tlie oath of ol'ice and made Ilia inauguration speech. Gen. Banks and other dialingsished public men, who were very near to him, with the best possible opportunity of seeing everything that passed, have stated that the manner of Mr. Johnson gavo no indications whatever that he had been drinking, This fact only increased tho surprise and wonder at his inappropriate and incoheren remarks The Ifttu Preston King said that he had been with Mr.

Mr. King aoid that Mr. Johnson's mind waa impaired by the great excitement to which he had been that waa the reason a single glass of wine effected him BO much.

Excursion Trip of Steamship Josephine. STRANDING ON" BEAZOS BAB, KOTES LYCIDEXTS BY AN EiE- WITNESS! the Browosvillu Raachero, March 13. On Wednesday morning, March 4tL, 1808, the new and splendid steamship Josephine, Capt. J. B.Lockwood, sailed from Cialveston for de Santiago, with sixty military excursionists, and about forty passengers and invited guests from Nuw and Gal veston.

Among 1 thu excursionists were Maj. Gens. HartsurT, Tompkins and Porter, and Brig. Geo. Graham, Inspector General of Gen.

Hancock's staft'. Also Col. Guy, commanding the post of Gal veston, and Capt. Chas. Garretson, post and depot quartermaster at Gal- veeton.

Also Judgo John C. Watrous, and Marshal JaR, J. Byrne, of the United- States Court, and James Ancliews, local editor and marine reporter of the Gal ves- ton Daily Civilian. At twenty-five minutes pastil o'clock we crossed the outer bar and proceeded on our course. No iflcident worthy of special notice transpired until our arrival off Brazos bar, the exception oi a rotigli sea, and considerable amung the passengers.

At half past 9 o'clock on Thursday morning, March Oth, we arrived off Brazos, signalled the pilot boat, and again put to sea for safety. Tucked and cnuio back, when the pilot bout cnme alongside aad sent a pilot on botird. Wu then made the attempt to come over the bar, nnd when nearly over, the main steampipe bursteu, tho machinery stopped motion, aud the ship stuck hard and last on the bar. For a time we fexperiencGd quite an excitement, accompanied with great, consternation and JVar amongst the passengers, both male aad female. All excitement, however, subsided when it was ascertained that there was no immediate danger.

then let go our port anchor, and made all necessary preparations for the worst. The Pilot Boat; then went asbore, followed by one of the ship's boats Purser Joe, Gomila, with dispatches for Brownsville lor assistance. Iu a short time, the pilot bout returned with hawsers and a sixteen hundred pound anchor to our assistance. After much difficulty the anchor was planted, and an eight-inch hawser fast to tlie ship. In this condition we until Friday morning, March tLu Oth, when we attempted to get another hawser from tlie ship to the wreck at the steamer iSussuu, near which wo were laying.

In doingi-his we Jost one poor fallow overboard, Barney McGiven, and although every exertion was matte to save him, bo was drowned before assistance could reach hiin. We succeeded, however, in gutting 1 the hawser to the wreck, in a. I probability, was the only means of saving the and all on board. In making the hawser last to the wreck ol tbe Nassau, Mr. George Smith, tbe second mate's li'u was iu imminent dimmer of being lost, and waa only saved by tbe crew of the AnUeUiiu and a daring pasBungtr, Barney Sbarkey.

The mate wat on die wreck of the Nassau, making the li.iTi'ser fast, when the PCJJI becarce EO rough that it was thought uo boat could livu. Tbe men, however, above ulhuled to, uiJido the attempt, and at the rieik of their own lives, succeeded in saving Unit of a fellow mortal. For this act- they deservo great pruige, and we i pleasure iu making ihis special mention of their noble At night o'clock iu the evening, everything being safe aud ate a heimy supper and went to bed, conscious of tbe luct that we were perfectly sate until morning. The pilot boat, which waa in readiness, took them on boiml.aml landed tburn safely at point Isabel. The military excursionists, together i your reporter, mutinied 011 board. Towards evening the wiud again shifted, the tide set in heavy, and the chances for getting the shipailuat were quite favorable, la diis, however, wu were again doomed to disappointment. During tho night of the 7th, the ship gradually worked forward, and daylight on the morning of tbe 8-b, was nearly amidships of this wreck of the the Nassau, Sunday morning, March tbe Stb, found the ship gradually workiug forwiird into the, slosh, channel." Got a port hawser aft, threw the cargo overboard, got up steam, and heaving ahead on the forward port and 12 o'clock the ship was nearly afloat. Everybody was in -the best of spirits, but at 2 o'clock in tbe afternoon the ship again struck, and at 4 o'clock sue was bard, and fast ashore, on the point of Pftdro Island.

Nothing of interest occurred on the Oth the ship retainiug her position unchanged. Early on the morning of tbe 10th, Gen. Graham, Captains Garretson and Barnard, your reporter and the majority "of tho excursionists camu ashore leaving Gens. Hartsuff, Potter and Tompkins, and Col. Gay and Mr.

Whitney and their ladies on board. Taking sail Brazos, wo landed in safety Point. laabu), where we took pnpsage on ambulances, which in readiness for tlie occasion, and arrived in Brownsville at 7 o'clock in the evening. Further particulars of tho Josephine, together i the arrival of the steamers St. Mary and Austin will be found in our specials from Brazos.

Ihe Rarclicro of the IQtli. The stranded Josephine remains in the samu pOFiuon aa when we last, reported her situation. We understand she has been throwiup her freight overboard, but how much of her cargo has been thus disposed of we do not know. It was reported that the Tamaulipas iSo. 1.

LFrom Conrlur, I-Uli. We learn from Lt. Plummer who arrived from Puint Isabel yesterday, that the Jo- eephine remains hi slatuquo, and thai the Austin has received considerable injury from i against the anchors nearthe Josephine.

The remainder of tbe Josephine's cargo was thrown overboard on Thursday night, tho Ifctuchuro, iGtb. Mrs. Josephine Hutchinaon, after whom the palatial steamtibip Josephine in named, came from New Orleans with tbe many guests who awj now in our city. When the steamer stranded on I3razoa bar, this beautiful and accomplished lady announced her determination to re-itmin on Ihe vessel until she was either liopuleely lost OT saved. When the distinguiabod guests began to depart from the Josepliine they urged her to accompany them, to this city, but she reinu.inwlintles.ible in her resolution to stand by tbe ship," continued on board, and now has the gladdening satisfaction to stand on the decks of her graceful namesake, which Jloats agaiu.
