MAGENTA BLACK 15D pagelabeltag THE PALM BEACH POST SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2009 15D ADVERTISEMENT -I Pets Are Family, Too! by Randall S. Dugal, D. V.M. UNDERSTANDING HEARTWORM DISEASE Heartworm disease, transmitted by larvae-carrying mosquitoes, has been documented in all 50 states, but it is most prevalent in the south and southeast. Often thought of as a canine disease, heartworms can infect cats, ferrets, wolves, foxes, sea lions, and very rarely humans.

Heartworms live in the blood of a dog's heart and blood vessels for about seven years, two years in cats. While most commonly affecting dogs, the disease is almost always fatal for cats. Veterinary advances have made the treatment of heartworm disease possible for dogs in all but the most severe cases, the reason annual heartworm screening is vital. The best way to keep your pet safe from heartworm disease is to administer heartworm preventive medicine. 1 If you share your home with one of the above- mentioned pets, now is a good time to ask you veterinarian about protection from heartworm.

While parasites can be bothersome at the least, the destructive heartworm is fatal if left unchecked. Our compassionate health care team provides total veterinary care for small pets of all kinds, including vaccinations and other preventive care, nutrition counseling, medical treatment, surgery, and dentistry. Feel free to call us at COMMUNITY ANIMAL HOSPITAL OF ROYAL PALM BEACH if you have any questions concerning your pet's health. We are conveniently located 14 mile east of Ft. P.

Beach at 11462 Okeechobee Blvd. For appointments or emergencies, please call 798-5508. OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK. P.S. If you don't live in a heavily heartworm-infested area but plan to be travelling with your pet to one, be sure to let your veterinarian know first.
