The members of the saengerbund had a very enjoyable time at their hall, corner of Preston avenue and Caroline street, this evening, furnished by the rendition of the programme published yesterday. There was a large crowd present anci at the completion of the programme dancing was begun and continued till after midnlffht.

LOCAL NOTES. There will be a mee'ting of the city council to-morrow afternoon. It will tie called to order promptly at 4 o'clock. There was no balloon ascension at Houston Heights this afternoon, as advertised, on account of the low temperature, which was supposed to be lower higher up. --Work has begun on the new depot at this plane. The graced county road from the Galveston bridge Is completed, as also the graded road from this place to Galveston bay. The main ditch cast of here, cut last spring, with lateral ditches i Into It, Is an object lesson. No water remained on the ground after the heavy rains of last September. The sound of the hammer and saw is the prevailing- music hereabouts.

Plowing, fencing, building houses and planting fruit trees, strawberries and gardens is the main worii of the community. The school is Nourishing. There Is a J1200 school house, and an attendance of over ilfty pupils. There Is regular preaching: by the different and Sunday school every Sunday. There is a flnp artesian well and the water is--well, just a little better and softer than any other.

The people i here nrn mostly from north western states and are Industrious, Intelligent citizens. Mr. Fort Smith of Galveston has a fine place on Clear Lake, and Mr. J. C.

A runner was speedily sent to Granger for a physician, who arrived promptly and put in most of the night with the sufferers, who were afdieted with something resembling- cholera morb'is, and by the following day had brought many of them around to safety. Several of them continued quite, sick, but no serious results arc anticipated. The strangest part of the affair is that no canned meats or other articles of food had been eaten to which the cause could be traced. SHERIFF VS.

RAIN AT SAN ANTONIO. Three Inches of Snow at Belton, Followed by the First Rain in Several Months, In Oklahoma. Midland, Jan. A blinding snow storm here all day and still snowing. This Is the worst storm of tne winter.

AT CRAWFORD. Crawford, McLennan Jan. cold north wind of yesterday ceased last evening and clouda gathered, curdling in beautiful profusion over the w'liole western horizon. A gentle breeae from the southwest commenced blowing, and this morning a white snow carpets the whole. face of t'he earth, on an average three Inches deep.
