Wess Peterson arrived home Saturday from San Francisco where Mrs. Peterson has been under the doctor's care for over two months. A social party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.

L. Prather last Saturday evening and a fine time reported by all in attendance. Games and dancing were the principal amusements until 12 o'clock when a dainty luncheon was spread for the guests. Everyone came away voting Mr. and Mrs.

Prather as ideal entertainers. Those present were, Mr. and Mrs. J. L.

The suit of the county against the California Northwestern R. R. Co. was argued before Judge McGarvey this week. The company has offered to settle on a basis of a valuation of $3,500 a mile.

L. Van Dusen, senior, is very ill at his home in Ukiah. The rainfall at Mendocino to Jan. 17th was 36.28 Inches. At Lakeport for the same date it was 30 inches.

Ukiah has had 37.05. The storm which started Tuesday has demoralized the railway service and we have had no mail for two days. Snow is eight feet deep on the ridge in Eel river country and cattle are perishing in great numbers. January 26, 1900. Martin N.

Donohoe and Miss Katherine Wilson were married in Ukiah last Sunday. O. L. Smith, of Pine Ridge, was captured by Deputy Sheriff Wm. Ornbaun on the headwaters of Indian Creek this week and was sentenced by Judge Critchfield to six months in' the county jail.

The designation of the quantity of the commodity required by section four of this act shall be according to weight, measure or nu- merial count, subject, however, to! the following provisions: (a) The designation used shall be such as is most feasible and suitable to the character of the commodity, or, it there is a trade custom as to the measure of the quantity of the commodity, the designation shall be in accordance with the custom. (b) If the designation is by weight, it shall be in terms of pounds, ounces, or fractions, of either, avoirdupois, standard of this state. (c) If the designation is by liquid measure, it shall be In terms of gallons, quarts, pints or fractions of any of said units, standard of this state for liquid measure. (d) If the designation is by solid measure, it-shall be in terms of bushels, pecks, or quarts, or fractions of any of said units, standard of this state for solid measure.

(e) If the designation is by numerical count, it shall be in English words or Arabic numerals. The words "net contents" 'or the words "net weight" or the words "net measure" or the words "net count" shall appear with and as a part of the designation of the quanti ty of the commodity as required by the provisions of this act. Sec. 6. The provisions of this act shall not apply: (a) To any sale of a commodity within the provisions of this act when such sale is made from bulk and the quantity is weighed, measured, counted for the immediate purpose of such sale.

I (b) To a sale of any container of an ornamental or symbolic character with which a quantity ot some commodity is sold as merely incidental. (c) To a sale of a commodity in a quantity that is sold for less than eleven cents, at retail. Sec. 7. It shall not he held to be a violation of the provisions of this act when a commodity in a container is sold, or offered or exposed for sale, and there is a discrepancy between the actual quantity of the commodity In said container and the net quantity of the contents thereof indicated on the container as herein prescribed, provided such discrepancy is due to unavoidable leakage, shrinkage, evaporation, waste, or causes beyond the control of the seller acting In good faith.

Sec. S.
