14. A The Scout Local little leaguers enjoy success at World Series Lfc MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Seattle Mariners came into the Metrodome with great expectations of making a serious run at their first American League West title. They left with little hope of catching the Twins. Randy Bush tied the game with a three-run, ninth-inning homer and Scott Leius won it with a two-out shot in the 10th in the Twins' 5-4 win over Seattle Thursday. It completed a three-game sweep that knocked the Mariners 9Vi games back.

Earlier in the week, the Twins opened some ground on three-time defending AL champion Oakland, winning three of four. "I think it's important to push those teams back when you've got the chance," Bush said. "We did what we I wish we would have swept Oakland, too." Of the Mariners, Bush said: "I don't think they're buried. But I do like where we're at." Seattle came into town knowing that it could move within 3 16 games of first place with a sweep of the Twins. Instead, the reverse happened and the Mariners are in deep trouble.

"I think we're still in the race," said Mike Schooler, who blew a 4-1 lead by allowing all of Minnesota's runs in the ninth and 10th innings. "We can only hope the Twins will have a downslide. We ran into a buzzsaw this series and if they keep playing that way, I don't know if anyone can catch them." The Twins, who won for the sixth time in their last seven games, have won 15 games in their final at bat. They have a six-game lead, their biggest of the season. Schooler (0-1), who had 63 McGladrey Pullen's 12-and- ir tv 4 saves in 74 chances the last two years and was 5-for-5 since coming off the disabled list this season, struck out pinch-hitter Dan Gladden to start the ninth before walking No.

9 batter Al Newman, a .210 hitter. "Maybe my biggest mistake was walking Newman," Schooler said. "I knew he was looking for a walk and wasn't going to swing. But I just didn't get the ball over the plate." Chuck Knoblauch singled and Bush sent Schooler's next pitch over the right-field fence for his fifth homer. In the 10th, Leius hit Schooler's 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his fourth homer and first since July 25.

Leius, a right-handed batter, usually plays only against lefthanders. But because the Twins made several switches earlier in the game, he had to face the right-handed Schooler. "He struck me out twice before with his slider, so I was looking for a slider," Leius said. "I was just fortunate to get a good pitch to drive. It was a lazy slider." Rick Aguilera (4-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Twins.

'w 0Zv Key Hawkcycs One of Iowa football coach Hayden Fry's biggest concerns as the season approaches is finding a replacement for all-Big Ten tight end Michael Titley. Juniors Alan Cross and Matt Whitaker are competing for the No.

1 spot. Fry said he expected both to play this season. Cross Whitaker By Pat Harty The Press-Citizen Four years ago, Alan Cross traveled halfway across the country without a scholarship to play football at Iowa. Cross, a San Diego native, now is competing with junior Matt Whitaker for the No. 1 tight end position.

The winner will replace all-Big Ten performer Michael Titley. At last week's football media day, Iowa Coach Hayden Fry refused to name a starter. He also said it would be unfair to compare Whitaker or Cross with Titley, who was just recently released by the NFL Miami Dolphins. "We have Matt Whitaker and Alan Cross in a real good battle for the number one position," Fry said. "I think they'll be adequate.

They probably won't be as good as Titley, because he was a force. He had a knack for making the big play." Dave Iowa's tight end speed, but there's not a lot of tight ends in the conference that weigh only 225 pounds," Triplett said. Triplett said redshirt freshman Greg Allen looked impressive in practice. "Greg's still learning how to play the position, but I look for him to provide us with depth," Triplett said. "He's our number three guy right now." Like Whitaker, Allen is from Ankeny.

He was a first-team all-state linebacker and standout coach, said he expected Cross and Titley to contribute this season. "They give us good stability at that position," Triplett said. "We like to use a lot of double tight (ends), so both will play." Cross, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound junior, was listed as a starter after spring practice. He had five receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown in the spring game. He caught seven passes for 98 yards last season.

Whitaker played mostly on special teams last season. The former all-state running back from An- keny made his biggest contribution during Iowa's 54-28 victory against Illinois. Whitaker hooked up with Jim Hartlieb for a 14-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal. He finished the year with two receptions for 23 yards. He had five receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown in the spring game.

Triplett said Cross, who can run a 4.6-second 40-yard dash, could be the fastest tight end in the Big Ten.
