While in the hospital, it was discovered Lowe, a non-smoker, had lung cancer and it had spread to his liver and bones. Juniors Alan Cross and Matt Whitaker are competing for the No.

1 spot. Fry said he expected both to play this season. Cross Whitaker By Pat Harty The Press-Citizen Four years ago, Alan Cross traveled halfway across the country without a scholarship to play football at Iowa. Cross, a San Diego native, now is competing with junior Matt Whitaker for the No. 1 tight end position.

The winner will replace all-Big Ten performer Michael Titley. At last week's football media day, Iowa Coach Hayden Fry refused to name a starter. He also said it would be unfair to compare Whitaker or Cross with Titley, who was just recently released by the NFL Miami Dolphins. "We have Matt Whitaker and Alan Cross in a real good battle for the number one position," Fry said. "I think they'll be adequate.

They probably won't be as good as Titley, because he was a force. He had a knack for making the big play." Dave Iowa's tight end speed, but there's not a lot of tight ends in the conference that weigh only 225 pounds," Triplett said. Triplett said redshirt freshman Greg Allen looked impressive in practice. "Greg's still learning how to play the position, but I look for him to provide us with depth," Triplett said. Whitaker played mostly on special teams last season. The former all-state running back from An- keny made his biggest contribution during Iowa's 54-28 victory against Illinois. Whitaker hooked up with Jim Hartlieb for a 14-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal. He finished the year with two receptions for 23 yards. He had five receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown in the spring game.

Triplett said Cross, who can run a 4.6-second 40-yard dash, could be the fastest tight end in the Big Ten.
