A Ntw Symphony by Dubois Mm. Homer, Soloist. At the second evening concert of the New Torts Symphony Society in Car-hegle HsJI. Mr. Pajnrosch presented a program which, as be took occasion to remark before the end.

was made up of works by a Frenchman, Dubois; two Belgians. Lekeu and Cesar Franc a Bcotchman, Mackenzie, and an Ataer-ioan, Horatio Parker. There was also an air by an Austrian. Uluck. Mroe.

Louisa Homer was the soloist. The symphony. 'a recent composition by the aged Theodore Dubois, has little relation with the music of the present generation of Frenchmen, it is a vigorous, straightforward composition, sometimes a little too obvious for lasting quality, written with skill both in the origination and development of material and in the management of orchestral sonorities. There are Impressive memento In It. especially in the first and last movements.

The scherso is agreeable, based on facile melodies. There is much use of the celesta, as In the second movement. with iu folksong sub Jeict; and some of the orchestral color here and elsewhere in the composition Is strikingly it rave much pleasure and was much-applauded. Lekeu's adagio for strings is of a solemn beauty in its sustained melody and Its rich and varied harmony. It seemed' not altogether firmly knit in structure, bat it Is deeply felt tnuslo and engages the sympathy of the listener.
