MUSIC 16 venue Friday, May 5, 2006 Tibetan monks sing at Popejoy JOURNAL STAFF REPORT he singers of Drepung Loseling Monastery, accompanied by some musicians playing 10-foot-long trumpets, will be on stage at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Popejoy Hall. The concert, which is part of its Sacred Music Sacred Dance Tour, will show the public its special multiphonic singing style. That means the monks simultaneously intone three notes of a single chord. The monks are known for this style.

The concert has loftier goals to contribute to world healing and peace movements, to heighten awareness of endangered civilization and to support the Tibetan refugee community in India. Accompanying the costumed singers are musicians who play drums, bells and cymbals as well as trumpets. In addition, the monks will build a mandala sand painting for three days before the concert in the Popejoy lobby. The consecration ceremony will follow the concert. The monks have played to sellout performances at New York Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Tickets for the Popejoy concert are $19, $26 and $32 in advance at UNM ticket offices in the Bookstore and the Pit, online at www.unmtickets.com, by calling 925-5858 or at the Center for the Arts box office. Popejoy Hall is in the University of New Mexico Center for the Arts.
