Quast, named the nation's top freshman linebacker by The Sporting News is still ailing from a shoulder injury suffered during Iowa's regular-season j-nale at Minnesota Nov. 22.

Quast, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound freshman from Des Plaines, 111., was Iowa's third-leading tackier during the regular season. He. made 95 tackles, 55 of those unassisted. Junior Dan Wirth and sophomore Tyrone Taylor were ex-; pected to replace Quast alongside honorable mention all-Big Ten senior George Davis. UI wins Anteater in final seconds By Steve Carlson The Press-Citizen LONG BEACH, Calif.

When a game's final score is 105-103, defense is not likely to be considered the determing factor in the outcome. But with 20 seconds left in Iowa's victory over California-Irvine Monday, an exorbitant offensive display had left the teams so even that the game which featured a furious full-court pace throughout was reduced to a test to see who would succumb in one possession of half-court offense. It came down to the Anteaters, more aptly nicknamed the Ants, being out to spoil third-ranked Iowa's picnic with a last-second, three-point field goal. But UC-Irvine failed to get off a shot and Iowa (12-0) captured its third tournament championship of the season, 105-103, in the Anteater Classic title game at Long Beach Arena. "Coach told us to come out and play half-court defense all over, me against you," Iowa guard B.J.

Armstrong said of the final sequence, in which the Anteaters were unable to get off a shot and had the ball stolen in the final seconds by Kevin Gamble. "Just go out and get in their faces and contain them. They lost track of time and didn't get a shot off." Iowa coach Tom Davis said he could have accepted a two-point basket by the Anteaters that would send the game into overtime, but he worried they would knock in a three-pointer and knock Iowa off. So Davis sent his team out in an aggressive man-to-man defense rather than a zone. "I don't know how you could defend better than what we did," Davis said.

"We came out and put good presssure on the ball against quicker, smaller people and that prevented them from getting a shot to win the game." "We kind of escaped with the victory," Armstrong said. "Like coach said, we don't know how we want it, but we want it." Characteristic of the Hawkeyes has been when they are on the ropes, they have recovered and found a way to win. At one time Monday, UC-Irvine seemed about one punch away from a knockout. See DEFENSE4B I if By Kelly Carter The Press-Citizen SAN DIEGO Hayden Fry always stresses to his players the importance of the positive. So it's no surprise when the Iowa coach continually talks about how much San Diego State's defense has improved during the 1986 season.

"What he really means," San Diego State coach Denny Stolz said, "is that we stunk at first." The Aztecs aren't supposed to exactly stink tonight when they meet 19th-ranked Iowa in the ninth annual Holiday Bowl at Jack Murphy Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. CST. Iowa is favored by seven points. That's not much, considering how much bigger and badder the boys from the Midwest are supposed to be.

In actuality, these 8-3 teams match up quite well, at least on paper. So what if the Aztecs went through a period in midseason where they won only two of their five games. "The thing about San Diego State," Fry said, "is they weren't all that good early and they've made great improvement, particularly on defense. "That's the ballclub we're playing today the one that is very much improved and not the one back early when they were just putting it all together." Stolz is in his first year as Aztec coach, and when he came to San Diego, he inherited a team that's defense ranked 103 of 105 teams in NCAA Division I. A former Michigan State and Bowling Green head coach, Stolz said he had to bring the defense with him.

"After the first couple of games, some people still thought we didn't have any (defense)," Stolz said. In its first four games, SDSU gave up 133 points. In the last two, its opponents failed to score a touchdown and mustered only eight points. "We feel our football team got a lot better as the season progressed, and that hasn't surprised us," Stolz said. Fry.

said: "They've adapted to the new coach's style of play and improved tremendously from a defensive standpoint. That's really the most impressive thing. It's really incredible to think BYU failed to score a touchdown with the great offense they have every year and that (San Diego State) -would hold Hawaii to five points. If we had played them earlier, I think we would have had an advantage." But this is how, and the game is tonight. A last look at the, game The Associated Press Iowa's Roy Marble soars above three California-Irvine players, Joe Buchanan (23), Kevin Floyd (left) and Mike Doktorczyk, for a slam dunk during Monday night's championship game of the Anteater Classic in Long Beach, Calif.

Tar Heels defeat No. 2 Purdue What exactly has SDSU's defense done that's wowed Fry? "We're not one to change an awful lot," Stolz said. "We're a team to put in a foundation and build on it. The things that changed the most were not so much physical but mental. Unfortunately, most people spend a lot of time understanding how much thinking it takes to play offensive football all the plays, schemes.

There are defensive plays and schemes, too. "Our kids didn't understand our defense very well. We had a terrible time with it early in the year, which kind of amazed me, too, because it was simpler in the number of assignments than they'd had the previous year." Iowa fullback David Hudson, who has been hampered by quadriceps and ankle injuries, is expected to play tonight. Put him with tailback Rick Bayless, the Hawkeyes' plus rusher, and the Aztecs' defensive players could be running with their See PREVIEW38 spot may be further out of reach than it had been after No. 1 Nevada-Las Vegas pounded ninth-ranked Navy 104-79.

With senior guard Kenny Smith scoring a career-high 23 points, North Carolina advanced to a showdown tonight with Southern Methodist, a 79-65 victor over Towson State in the other semifinal game of the Dallas Morning News tournament. "I thought we were sharp until late in the game," Dean Smith said. "Then the coach got a little cocky with about six minutes left and a 25-point lead. I was disappointed with that stretch." With a tournament record crowd of 15,605 watching at Reunion Arena, North Carolina, 9-1, dominated Purdue, 7-1, after the first 10 minutes. North Carolina took a 46-34 halftime lead after Purdue led 23-20 with 10:05 to play in The Associated Press Purdue coach Gene Keady thought his second-ranked Boilermakers could learn a thing or two about the accuracy of the college basketball polls when they met No.

4 North Carolina. And the fact that his North Carolina counterpart Dean Smith could find fault with the play of his Tar Heels after they had a 25-point lead en route to a surprisingly easy 94-81 victory Monday reinforced Keady's feelings about the rankings. "I've said all along that I didn't believe the polls," Keady said. "We beat some young teams early and we needed to play a team like North Carolina to find out how good we are. We played like we practiced." Purdue's loss could help Iowa make another move upward in the polls, but the top- the first half.

The Tar Heels scored 10 straight points to pull away from the Boilermakers, who committed 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. J.R. Reid and Dave Popson scored 14 points apiece and Jeff Lebo had 13 for North Carolina. Doug Lee, who hit three three-point shots, led Purdue with 21 points. Everette Stephens added 17 and Todd Mitchell had 14.

UNLV also had a surprisingly easy night, whipping Navy. With senior guard Mark Wade dishing out a school-record 21 assists, the Runnin' Rebels, 11-0, led by as many as 35 points in winning the UNLV Holiday Classic. After leading 49-34 at the half, the Rebels blew the game wide open in the second half with man-to-man defense that forced numerous Navy turnovers. Indiana finished with a 17-11 record last year and was fourth in the Big Ten. Iowa won both times it played Indiana last year, but the Hoosiers lead the series 5-4. "We can't afford to make the crucial mistakes we made both during the second half and in the overtime," Iowa coach C. Vivian Stringer said. NON-WORD: Reporters in San Diego asked Aztecs fullback Corey Gilmore whether he and running back Chris Hardy were worried about fumbling four times in tonight's Holiday Bowl like Iowa's Ronnie Harmon did in the Rose Bowl a year ago.
