Cook Former 'Hastings Banner5 owner, civic leader He was past director and chairman of Thornapple Valley Foundation; past director and board secretary of the Viking Corp. and International Seal and Lock member of the Republican Party, where he served as former county officer and national delegate; member of the Barry County Historical Society, Bentley Historical Library Association; Historical Society of Michigan; member and past officer of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce; member and board of directors of Hastings Press and was a supporter of Boy Scouts and YMCA programs. He was named Centennial Business Award recipient in 1 959, Hastings High School Alumnus of the Year in 1 97 1 and received the Barry County Bar Association Liberty Bell Award in 1 988, and numerous honors for newspaper excellence.

Surviving is his daughter, Sally Cook of San Francisco; a son, William R. Cook of Hastings; and two grandchildren. His wife, the former Rose M. DeFoe, died in 1978. Services will be 5 p.m.

Thursday at Hastings Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may go to the Organ Restoration Fund at the church. She moved to Florida in 1979 from Bronson. Surviving are a daughter, Theda Pierson of Port Richey, sons, Glen Rierson of Lakeland, Fla. and Edward Rierson of Bronson; six grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren. Her husband of 68 years, Fred Rierson, died in 1977. Services will be 1 p.m.

Wednesday at Kolcz-Kubisak Funeral Home. Maude E. Diffenbaugh BRONSON Maude E. (Reynolds) Diffenbaugh, 96, of 307 Spruce Sturgis, died Saturday, Dec. 2, at Thurston Woods Village after a long illness.

She was bom in Bronson and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of the Mothers of World War II, Women's Christian Tem-perence Union, and worked as a nurses aide in home health care. She made her home with her daughter-in-law, Evelyn Diffenbaugh of Adrian for 15 years. Surviving are a son, Fay Diffenbaugh of Jonesville; a daughter, Barbara Manifold of Coldwater; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Her husband, Vern Diffenbaugh, died in the 1940s.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Max Diffenbaugh in 1975 and Reynolds Diffenbaugh in 1971. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kolcz-Kubasiak Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may go to the American Legion of Bronson for the Memorial Park. Lester Ivins PALMETTO, FLA.

Lester Ivins, 95, formerly of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Dec. 2 at his daughter's home after a brief illness. He was bom in San Luis Obispo, and moved to Michigan in 1 899 and came to Battle Creek a few years later. He was a self-employed carpenter in the Battle Creek area for more than 60 years, retiring in 1 986, when he moved to Florida. He was a member of Pennfield Assembly of God.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Opal Hawk of to decorate the city's Christmas tree. The tree stands in all its holiday glory on the Michigan Mall between Ferarri's and Robinson's. Police and Fire Woman assaulted: a 30- year-old Battle Creek man was in city jail today after he allegedly raped a woman at his residence in the first block of Pittee Street early Sunday morning. The victim, 39, told Battle Creek police she had been visiting the man at his apartment. When she attempted to leave, the man reportedly barred her way, then beat her when she resisted him.

After he assaulted her, the victim left the apartment and flagged down a passing police car, police said. She was treated at Leila Hospital and released. Police obtained a search warrant of the residence and arrested the suspect on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Man stabbed: a 54-year-oid Battle Creek man was admitted to Leila Hospital and released after he was stabbed about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at his residence in the 100 block of North Wood Street, Battle Creek police reported.

Police said the man was stabbed by a 27-year-old female acquaintance who reportedly forced her way into his house and demanded money. A fight ensued and the victim was stabbed in the hand and stomach, Here's a rare opportunity to buy police said. The suspect fled the scene with a small amount of cash and could not be located by police. The investigation is continuing. Man robbed: A Battle Creek man was robbed of his wallet and an undetermined amount of money Saturday night at the Hart Motor Inn.

The victim, 2 1 told Battle Creek police he had gone to the hotel to visit his girlfriend when two men forced him into a room. One of the men struck the victim and took his wallet while the other man held him. The two men fled. Man threatens sister, a 37- year-old Battle Creek man was arrested by Battle Creek police after he allegedly pointed a gun at his sister and threatened to shoot her shortly after midnight today in the first block of Woolnough Street. The woman, 44, said the suspect had returned home and had gotten into an argument with another resident of the house.

She told the suspect to be quiet and he threatened to shoot her. He reportedly went downstairs and got a handgun and pointed it at the woman, then put the gun down, saying it wasn't loaded. Cook, 88, of 505 S. Park died Saturday, Dec.

2, at Pennock Hospital. He had been a patient there three weeks. He was bom in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School in 1920. He graduated in 1924 from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He worked in the research development department of the Goodrich Rubber Akron, Ohio, and then joined his father, William R.

Cook, in the publishing of the Hastings Banner in 1930. He became owner and publisher of the paper in 1 940. The paper was sold in 1973. He retired in 1980. He was a member and past vestryman of Hastings Emmanuel Episcopal Church, past chairman of West Michigan Episcopal Churchman's Association and Diocese commiteeman; director emeritis of National Bank of Hastings; 57-year member, past president and Red Rose recipient of the Hastings Rotary Club, Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International; member and past director of the Michigan Press Association; member of the University of Michigan Association and University of Michigan Press Club.

Oren M. Mead Oren M. Mead, 75, of 163 Sawyer died Saturday, Dec. 2, at his home after a short illness. He was bom in Lacey and lived in the Battle Creek area all his life.

He worked in 1934 for United Steel and Wire Co. until World War II when he worked for Eaton Manufacturing. He worked at United Steel and Wire again from 1945-1956, and from 1959, retiring in 1976. He was Oren M. Mead a volunteer firefighter for Emmett Township since 1947 and served as chief from 1956-1959.

He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 704 retirees and A.T. Metcalf Lodge No. 419 He was an avid gardener. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Frances A. Olm-stead; a daughter, Arietta C.

Ri-char of Tekonsha; sons, Merle W. and James O. Mead, both of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and six step-greatgrandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Farley-Estes Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may go to Good Samaritan Hospice Care. Thomas S. Wiley Thomas S. Wiley, 79, of 118 Pepper Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 3, in Leila Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

He had been ill for a year. He was a lifelong Battle Creek resident. He was formerly employed by Central Electric for 10 years, before becoming a dispatcher with the Battle Creek Fire Department. He worked there for 29 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of Elks Lodge 131, and enjoyed fishing and following the activities of the fire department on his police scanner.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Parker, a son, Richard T. Wiley of Victorville, a daughter, Diane Smith of Green Bay, seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Royal Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be given to American Diabetes Association.

Fern C. Flegel CHARLOTTE Fern C. (Van Haun) Flegel, 82, of 706 S. Bostwick St, died Sunday, Dec. 3, in Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital.

She was bom in Elsie and lived in Charlotte for the past 35 years, moving here from Fowlerville. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. There are no immediate survivors. Her husband, Otto "Mike" Flegel died in 1982. Services will be 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Pray Funeral Home. Arlene M. Parker Arlene M. Parker, 90, of 320 Pleasantview Drive, died today, Dec. 4, at Leila Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Halverson Chapel, Three Rivers. Harold M. Jones Harold M. Jones, 68, of 8011 Division Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 2 at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Shaw-Estes Funeral Home. JVL Sp yard, then locked the suspect outside. Police found the man at the back door trying to get into the house. A handgun was located on a balcony above the back porch. Police are seeking warrants for felonious assault and on a felony firearm charge.

Woman assaulted: a 26- year-old Battle Creek woman was treated at Leila Hospital and released after she was assaulted by a man about 2 a.m. Saturday during a domestic dispute at a residence in the 600 block of West Van Bu-ren Street. She told Battle Creek police she tried to break up a fight between two brothers, one of whom struck her with a chair. The woman said she did not want to press charges. Fire damages trailer Battle Creek firefighters spent about 30 minutes Sunday morning putting out a fire in a utility trailer at 131 Pleasant Ave.

The fire, which was reported about 1 a.m., caused about $200 damage to the trailer, according to the Battle Creek Fire Department. The fire is believed to have been started from live coals being tossed into the trailer, the department said. Phone Orders promptly tilled Call S79-2323 A Laura A. Wurm HASTINGS Laura A. (Ter-pening) Wurm, 100, of 249 E.

North died Sunday, Dec. 3, at Hastings Provincial House, where she had been for eight years. She was born and raised in Hope Township, Barry County, attending the Schultz School. After certification, she taught one year at the McNee School in Barry County. She moved to Hastings in 1 959.

She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church and Ladies Circle of the church, and the Brush Ridge Cemetery Circle. Surviving are a daughter, Edna Cota of Battle Creek; a son, Frederick Wurm of Hastings; 1 1 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Oscar F. Wurm, died in 1958. She was also preceded by three daughters, Ella Durban died in 1956, Gertrude Binkley in 1983 and Violet Kelley in 1989.

Services will be 1 1 a.m. Wednesday at Wren Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may go to Hope United Methodist Church or any charity. Fern Fidler QUINCY Fern (Sebring) Fidler, 97, of 45 W. Chicago died Saturday, Dec.

2, at Community Health Center of Branch County. She was bom in Spencer, and lived most her life in the Quin-cy area. She was a member of Quincy Methodist Church and its Esther Circle. Surviving are a daughter, Mona Gochenour of Coldwater, a son, Myron Fidler of Jackson; 9 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Martin Fidler, died in 1965.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Quincy Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Diedrich-White Funeral Home. Walter S. Kulish DELAWARE, OHIO Walter S.

Kulish, 73, formerly of Battle Creek, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at Grady Memorial Hospital. He was born in Columbus, Ohio. He was employed by Kellogg Co. for 11 years.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Polish National Alliance Lodge 2416. Surviving are sons, Walter S. Kulish Jr. and Steve Karl Kulish, both of Battle Creek; a daughter, Kathy Ann Finch of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, one greatgrandchild; a brother, Stanley Cook of Sunbury, Ohio; and sisters, Ann Cretella of Youngstown, Ohio, Ginger Stover of West Jefferson, Ohio, Helen Evans of Dublin, Ohio, and Pauline Kroninger of Sunbury.

Services will be 1 0 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Sunbury. Arrangements are by DeVore Funeral Home, Sunbury. Aulton K.

Treacher COLDWATER Aulton K. Treacher, 56, of Elkhart, Ind. and formerly of Coldwater, died Saturday, Dec. 2, in Las Vegas, while attending a recreational vehicle show. Arrangements are pending at Putnman Funeral Home.

Ambrose B. Stampfler RICHLAND Ambrose B. "Andy" Stampfler, 54, of 9604 E. M-89, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, after a long illness.

He was bom in Detroit and attended W.K. Kellogg School in Hickory Comers. He was a self- employed truck driver for many years. Surviving are daughters, Sandra Ruge of Seminole, Kelly Hil-dreth of Marion, Ohio, and Kim berly Hageman of Kalamazoo; sons, Dale Hageman of Kalamazoo and John Stampfler of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren; his mother, Mildred Stampfler of Del ton; a sister, Mary Malazek of Bay City; and brothers, Bernard Stempfler of Delton and John Lenz of Battle Creek. Services will be 2 p.m.

Tuesday at the Williams Funeral Home, Delton. Memorial contributions may go to the American Cancer Society. Marie P. Misenar Marie P. (Thiel) Misenar, 59, of 134 Nettles died Sunday, Dec, 3, in Community Hospital, where she was taken after being stricken at home.
