2 Sec. Three THE BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER AND NEWS Sunday, June 11, 1967 Names 8 Fighters for Tournament WBA Won't Reinstate Clay "--V: Patterson, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Ellis, Leotis Martin and George Chuvalo. "There will be an eight-man boxing tournament, comprising seven different bouts," the WBA said, "with the top eight ranking contenders eligible to participate in the elimination tournament for the heavyweight championship of the world." WBA president M. Robert Evans said the time and place of the seven bouts would be up to promoters. In affirming its earlier decision, the WBA said: "In recognizing a boxer as world champion, the WBA enjoins him to set a champion's example in high ideals and sportsmanship in the belief that, while a world champion is not greater than the sport in which he reached the pinnacle of success, no sport can rise above the level of those who take part in it." The boxing association said the tenure of a champion "is and must be a trusteeship for the use and benefit of all those boxers and followers who sustain the profession in existence." The WBA took away Clay's title April 28, when he refused to be inducted at Houston, Tex.

The fighter faces trial in Houston June 19. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LTD The World Boxing Association Saturday rejected a reinstatement appeal by deposed heavyweight champion Cassius Clay and named eight fighters to compete in a tournament to determine his successor. The WBA executive committee affirmed its decision of April 28 in stripping Clay of his title for refusing to be inducted into the Army. "The executive committee finds the actions of Cassius Clay Muhemmand Ali to be detrimental to the best interests of professional boxing," the group said in a prepared statement.

Attorney Hayden Covington of New York pleaded Clay's case earlier in the day before the committee. He urged that Clay's title be restored on grounds that he has not been convicted of criminal charges filed against him by the federal government. The WBA released its heavyweight ratings, which were withheld pending the Clay hearing, and rated Karl Milden-berger of Germany as the No. 1 contender for the vacated title. Ranked behind Mildenberger were Joe Frasier, Argentina's Oscar Bonavena, Ernie Terrell, Thad Spencer, Floyd i v- i amn, 1 T.
