Defensive tackle Richard Turner is rarely in the center of a mob of fans. Until the opposing team lines up. That's when Turner, a 6-2, 255-pound "old country boy," earns the respect and admiration of fans and the praises of coaches. "I FEEL I'll get my recognition in front of the people on the field," Turner said Monday. "As long as there is a quarterback and a running back, they're going to get the attention.

Former Michigan State University track and cross country coach KarLA. Schlade-man died Monday, December 22, at age 90, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Schlademan had come to MSU in 1940 from Washington State, and led the Spartans to six Big Ten Championships, five IC4A titles and five NCAA crowns. What he regarded to be the highlight of his 44-year career was when the Spartans tied with Southern California in a dual meet at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1949. SCHLADEMAN'S COACHING years had produced many outstanding runners, including Warren Druetzler, the NCAA mile run king in 1951 and Olympic competitor at Helsinki in 1952.

After his retirement from MSU in 1958, he helped in the marketing of the Adidas sporting shoes in the U.S. for Vander-voort's, now Vanco's, of Lansing. In addition to his many track records that had gained him national acclaim at all of the colleges he coached, he admitted to the Helms Athletic foundation Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1955. Karl A. Schlademan Schlademan was born in Seafield, Indiana and graduated from DePaul University in 1911.

He is survived by his wife Nell and daughter Sarah K. Hall..
