B. (U. The navy's losses in action In the battle of the Atlantic today stood officially at 100 officers and men killed, more than 18 Injured, one destroyer sunk, one naval tanker and one destroyer seriously dam- aped. These losses was suffered In two weeks, October 10-31, In convoys on the sen lanes off Ireland. Ger- mint submarines, hunting in packs, stalked tho convoys carrying precious war materials to Hritain as well as supplies tn the American base at Iceland, and in (he dead of night torpedoed and sank the 1000-ton destroyer Keiibcn James and seriously damaged the destroyer Ki-arny flic naval linker Tho navy's statement that the Salinas was hit one day before tho Reuben James was sunk indicated that one battle of a submarine "wolf pack" against the convoys lasted at least two days.

This is not an unusual occurrence since modern submarines can travel as fast under water as the older freight steamers, and the convoy must keep the tyaeo of its slowest members. The Gorman technique is to fol- low merchant ships for days on end, coming to tho surface at night to take advantage of their still greater surface speed to send torpedoes Into the heart of convoy. In this way the German high command lias frequently claimed its I'-hoots have sunk tons of thousands of tons of shipping in en- counters lasting four and five days on the main ocean "highways" be-' (ween the British Isles and Gibraltar, south of Ireland, and most recently In the area south of Iceland, German military have on one occasion vaguely referred to the method of the actual press publication. In one such the submarines by prearranged plan come to the surface at night In the center of the convoy and loose their torpedoes in all directions. Another tactic, known in Berlin as the "tangential attack," Involves tho launching of all torpedoes from positions to one side of the convoy.

The details of these operations and the methods used by t'-boats at sea. to communicate with one another before such an attack arc jealously guarded military secrets. Solon Selected for Congress Vacancy INGLEWOOD, Nov.
