SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1987 BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER Obituaries 67, of 12252 Road, died Thursday at his home. He was born in Parma and lived in the Marshall area all his life. He worked for the former Sherer-Gillett Co. in Marshall and its successor, the former Warren-Sherer Corp. until it closed.

He served in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II. Later, he worked on the water crew for the Marshall Electric Light and Water Department, retiring in January 1986. Owens and his wife worked part time at the TriLake Trailer Park in Marshall during the camping season. He was a life member of Claude E.

Hale Post 4073 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Moose Lodge 676. He and his wife were avid campers for many years. He was active in Marshall bowling! leagues and was a member of the former Cereal City Four Wheel Drive Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Emily L.

Pike, who died in 1982 and a brother, Mason who died in 1978. Surviving are a son, Roland "Ron" M. of Marshall; four grandsons; brothers, W. Say Owens and Glen A. Owens, both of Marshall; and sisters, Lila E.

Hyso and Lois Walsh, both of Marshall; Jennie E. Winnans of Battle Creek and Ruth Worthington of Webster, Fla. Services will 2 p.m. Monday at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home.

(Cushman) Smith, 69, of 16943 10-Mile Road, died Friday at Marshall Manor after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lee Township and lived in the area all her life, moving to her present address from Marshall in 1960. She was a former waitress at Schuler's in Marshall. She was a kitchen manager at Wattles Park Elementary School, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Battle Creek and was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the women's ministries and a church campground volunteer.

She was a former 4-H leader. She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Hones; a daughter, Janet Galley; and sisters, Marie Reed and Vila VanArman. Surviving are her husband, Leonard W. Smith; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Smith of 1 Bradenton, a stepson, Leonard W. "Bud" Smith Jr.

of Marshall; stepdaughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Joan) Peterson of Battle Creek and Mrs. Walter (Terry) Arntson of Flint; six grandchildren; brothers, Donald Cushman of Marshall and Seth Cushman of Battle Creek; and sisters, Mrs. Gus (Isabelle) Olson of Palmetto, Mrs. Earl (Hazel) Midlam and 1 Mrs.

DuWayne (Donna) Sundberg, both of Marshall. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God in Battle Creek. Memorials donations may be made to the First Assembly of God. Arrangements are by Craig A.

Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. Fern L. Radee ALBION Fern L. (Benedict) Radee, 71, of 814 N. Ionia died Friday at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Bankers and lived most of her life in Albion. She was a secretary for more than 20 years with Southeastern Michigan Gas Co. in Albion and was a member of the DAR. Surviving are her husband, Elmer; a daughter, Rena Behling Macie of Sparta; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Saxon of Litchfield. No services are planned.

Arrangements are by Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the DAR. Dorr E. Robinson Dorr E. Robinson, 84, 256 Laural Drive, died Friday at Mercy Pavilion, where he had been a patient four months.

He was born in Bedford and lived in Dowling, Athens and Battle Creek. He lived in Marshall for six years prior to his illness. He had been employed by Advance Rumley Co. and then Clark Equipment Co. for 24 years.

He retired in 1945 when he began to farm in Athens. He trained and raced trotters and pacers until December. He owned harness-racing horses since 1935 and began racing them in 1946. After his wife, the former Evelyn Bolo, died in 1980, he moved to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds where he continued to horses. He is a life member of the Michigan Harness Horseman's Association, a member of the United States Trotting Association and past master and life member of Bedford Masonic Lodge 207 He is a Past Worthy Patron and Life Member of Bedford Order of the Eastern Star 471.

He is survived by a sister, Vera Blonigan of Battle Creek, brothers, Dayle Robinson of Bedford and Harold M. Robinson of Battle Creek. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Royal Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Martha R. Packard Martha R. (Osborn) Packard, 60, of Belleair Bluffs, died Wednesday at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fla. She was born in Battle Creek and graduated from St. Philip Catholic Central 1 High School in 1944.

She moved to Florida in 1981. She is survived by her husband, Damon C. Packard; three sons, Timothy Packard of Detroit, Daniel Packard of Pendleton, and Patrick Packard of San Diego; two daughters, Jane Hunter and Jean both of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren; four brothers, Patrick Osborn of St. Petersburg, Omar Osborn of Las Vegas, Richard Osborn of San Diego and Maurice Osborn of Battle Creek; three sisters, Mary Fish of Battle Creek, Gertrude Odette of Climax and Margaret Coffman of Hollywood, Fla. Services will be 10 a.m.

Monday at St. Philip Catholic Church. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.

Joseph V. Ortiz ALBION Joseph V. Ortiz, 69, of 1010 Fitch died early Friday at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, after a brief illness. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, and moved to Albion in 1935. He served in the U.S.

Army during World War II. He was employed as a sheet metal specialist for Union Steel Products, retiring in 1979. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 5255, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3672 and DAV Chapter 10. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary C.

Torre; a daughter, Gera A. Wade of Kalamazoo; a son, Gerard J. Ortiz of Albion; three grandchildren; brothers, Pete and Felix Ortiz Jr. of San Antonio; sisters, Vera, Lupe, Delthina and Tony of San Antonio and Sophia of Pontiac. Services will be 11 a.m.

Flights to aid farmers By ELAINE KULHANEK Assistant City The Battle Creek Balloon Club is organizing participants for the Great Balloon Lift for Farmers on May 16, a national effort to raise money for farmers facing foreclosure. People who donate $100 to the cause will receive a balloon ride in the Battle Creek area.

Pilots will donate their services. The Balloon Federation of America is sponsoring the lift as a thankyou to farmers for allowing balloonists to launch from and land on their individual properties. Terry Elliot, local organizer, said he thinks that at least 20 of the club's 32 pilots will participate. The national fund-raising goal is $250,000, which will be issued in increments of $50,000 to farmers facing foreclosure who are chosen from a lottery. Lori Greenstein, a BFA spokeswoman, said she is working with organizations that help farmers in crisis to set lists of names for the lottery.

She did not yet know if any from Michigan would be included. Carl Levin, introduced legislation Friday to set aside 83,000 acres of national forest in Michigan as federally protected wilderness where commercial development would be banned.
