Reality, 'Rescue' equally tempting TONIGHTS MUST-SEE (TV): "Amish in the City" debut, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Channel 18 (UPN). For all of its slick contrivances, this reality show (see story, Page ID) has a decent, human core. Five young Amish adults share a spectacular Los Angeles mansion with six party- hardy non-Amish.

Some of these people are only borderline interesting. Randy, who's Amish, has a chiseled torso and a blank look; Meagan, who's not, screams a lot. Others are intriguing, especially two of the Amish people. Mose is a gifted inventor with a droll sense of humor. Ruth never had a chance to go beyond eighth grade, but she has a passion for life; it's a pleasure to see the joy on her face when she first sees an ocean beach.

Mike Hughes Television mhugheslsj.com 377-1156 TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE (cable): "Rescue Me," 10 p.m., FX. After last week's terrific opener, this hour is deeper and darker and even better. Last week, we met a firefighter (Denis Leary) whose marriage has crumbled. Tonight, he wants to sabotage his wife's new lover. Also, his chief begins raging about a news story saying there are gay firemen.

Both situations spin wildly out of control. He was baptized, which was supposed to mean no more ventures into the outside world. Still, he left at least twice more; then he became a teacher in two different communities. "From about 16 to 20, 1 would have been considered a very rebellious teen, a bad influence," he said. "When I began teaching school, I became more of a role model." Now he may be what he calls "the unrole model." He's part of a TV show, living alongside (among others) a waitress who refuses any meat or dairy products and a club promoter who talks of a metrosexu-al lifestyle.

For now, UPN isn't saying whether any of the five were tempted away from their Amish beliefs. Their rumspringa may simply be continuing as they sort out life's extremes. During their time before the TV cameras, however, they met a rich mixture of people. One example is Kevan, 22, a sales representative and swim teacher with Persian roots. "Like a family, we did fight," Kevan said.

No one is baptized until adult-l hood.

Prior to baptism, young people can try "rumspringa," a period of sampling the outside world. i Most of the Amish males (70 I to 80 percent) and some of the females take advantage of that, I Mose said. When they're young usually between ages 16 and 24 they begin rumspringa. Eventually (with no time limit), i more than 90 percent return to 'the old ways. jj Many don't take full advan-i tage of rumspringa, said Daniel I Laikind, who is one of the show's producers.

"They're stay- ing within a mile of home, in trailer parks, getting drunk." 1 Now he's crafted an extreme version. The five people, who had already begun rumspringa, 1 are whisked to a Hollywood kind of life. The idea has drawn attacks. 1 The impressionable young Amish people, critics said, could be lured, tempted, mocked or misled, critics said. He's come up with several inventions for work or play, including a parlor trick that baffled his new roommates. His mind has remained restless, he said.

While the UPN show is groundbreaking in its ethnic array of eligible lovers, it is following what has become a whites-only tradition in the casting of its star.
