In submitting its recommendations to the CAA. the air safety board has endorsed th; "recognized efficacy and fundamental soundness" of check-flight instruction as required by the authority the demonstration phase of its student training pro-cram, and recommenced that this type of instruction be required the future in connection with all student training. And now for the air safety board's most important recommendation, which may soon be taken under CAA advisement, to wit: "That student pilots be required, before being permitted by the instructor to make a sola flight, to accomplish a satisfactorily written examination before an inspector of the civil aeronautics authority on elementary aerodynamics, the theory of flight, the air traffic rules as rft forth 111 Part CO of the civil air regulation, and pertinent portions of Part 20 cf the C. A. knowledge of which is considered essential to the safe navigation of aircraft in the vicinity of airports." The CAA has indicated its approval of above recommendation, with the exception that it feels the examination should be made a responsibility of flight instructors rather than of its inspectors, who are "al the field, and its upkeep will be divid- fin ea among the various units of the I council.

I Vpw Tprrit.nrv Tint's the word now going down the line to flight instructors. It's direct from the civil aeronautics authority and carries a lot of weight. As a result of the authority's flight training program in the schools and colleges soon to start on a big scale all airmen now holding flight instructor ratings must familiarize themselves with the new standardized methods of instruction and be re-rated before October 1 as to their competency to give flight instruction. A mild guess would be that a number of pilots in central Michigan will be affected. The work of re-rating instructors will be started by the CAA's inspectors on or about August 15, preference being given to airmen who expect to be engaged in the authority's vocational flight training program in schools and colleges during the next school year.

MiM NEW CALEDONIA AUSTRALIA Brisbane Miles South Pacific Ocean SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 10 (UP) A nation-wide survey just completed reveals that enly one out of every five American college men examined by army flight surgeons is able to pass the physical requirements of the United States army flying surgeons. The principal stumbling block in the way of acceptance, the survey shows, is defective eyes.

One-half of the rejections come from that cause, and the euricus quirk in this, it is pointed out. is that it is the eye strain undergone in preparing for the educational requirements that lowers the visual standard. "The severity of the eye requirements," the survey states, "offers two-edged problem. Few men are accepted for flying cadetships with less than two years cf college study; graduates are preferred but college study definitely takes a toll in eye strength and reduces the applicant's chance of meeting requirements." Near physical perfection is required for the flying service and the standards are higher than those for admittance to West Point. The survey finds that the other principal causes of rejection, after the eyes, are blood pressure, and pulse and heart abnormalities that account for one-third of the applicants who are turned down.

The Abrams Aerial Survey corporation will complete the mapping of square miles in Minnesota this year and will extend its survey to large areas in Ohio, Wet Virginia, and North Dakota, it was revealed late Wednesday. The work is being performed in conjunction with the -crop control program of the agricultural conservation committee. The multifold activities of the Lansing firm, which began its unique business on a very small scale not many years ago. include the completion of 10.000 square miles of aerography in western Pennsylvania and 16,000 in Wisconsin. Talbcrt Abrams, president of the corjjoration, is now in Wisconsin supervising the work of the crew there, but is expected to return to Lansing before the end of the week.

While the lower peninsula has been thoroughly mopped by Abrams' crews, 13.000 square miles remain in the upper peninsula. This area will come under the unerring camera's eye in the immediate future corporation officials said. Last year saw Abrams' aerographers in Porto Rico South America and South Africa. As a consequence, it is estimated that the actual ratio of college men able to pass the physical tests and come' through the rigorous training course is considerably less than one in ten. Of 2.170 civilian applicants examined for appointment during the last six months of 1938. the report shows 476 were accepted and 1.695 rejected on physical grounds, or approximately 22 percent of acceptances. Just as during the World war it has been ascertained that the Mississippi valley states furnish the highest average of acceptable applicants. Linn Camera Shop, Inc.
