Mrs. Kiersey was a cook in area restaurants and had been a school bus driver for a few years. She belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a charter member of the New Hope Worship Center. She married Leonard D. Kiersey, January 25, 1952, he preceded her in death in 2000.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing and embroidery and crocheting. She is survived by daughters, Linda (Scott) Hamilton of Homer, Paula (Stan) James of Canton, Ohio, Tina (Brian) Gluckey of Albion, sons, Robert (Karen) Kiersey of Mission Viejo, California, Roland "Bill" Kiersey of Albion, brothers, August Short, Charles Short both of Albion, twelve grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Leon, sister, Alice and brothers, William and Kenneth. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Clarence Center Cemetery with Reverend Bill Steere officiating, Visitation is scheduled Wednesday, from 5:00 8:00 p.m.

Jaques Marshall Maxine H. (Abendshein) Jaques, 85, of Marshall, died Saturday morning, May 11, 2002, at Oaklawn Hospital. Mrs. Jaques was born January 11, 1917, in Tekonsha Township to Harry and Charlotte (Olney) Abendshein. After attending a small country school, she graduated from Marshall High School in 1933.

She attended Calhoun County Normal, then taught for one year at the old Putnam School in Eckford Township. On June 20, 1936, she married Charles Jaques, he died August 15, 1977. She worked part time at many local business in Marshall. Mrs. Jaques was a member of Assembly of God Church.

She was a former member of the Marshall Monday Club, Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary and Pythian Sisters Past Chiefs Club. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Morning Club, she had also served as a deacon for several years to call on shutins. Her hobbies included doing crafts, reading and crocheting. She is survived by daughters, Charlene Shelts of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Sharon (Virgil) Berry of Oscoda, Michigan, son, William (Shari) Jaques of Snohomish, Washington, three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Gerry, and a brother, Earl Abendshein.

Friends may call at the Kempf Funeral Home, Monday from 6:00 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. 9:00 p.m.. The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Monday, 2:00 4:00 p.m.

Arrangements by Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. Roy C. Fuller Hastings Roy C. Fuller, 75, of Hastings, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Thornapple Manor, Hastings.

He was born April 10, 1926, in Hastings, the son of Evan and Claudia (Cole) Fuller. He was reared in Carlton Township of Barry County, attended the Rogers School and graduated in 1944, from Hastings High School. He served for 2 years in the U.S. Navy during II. He married Phyllis Hummel, June 10, 1950, she survives.

He was employed by the E. W. Bliss Company for thirtyeight years, retiring in 1982. He is also survived by his son, Kim Fuller of Pasadena, Texas, brother, Gerald Fuller of Mason, sisters, Betty (Robert) Stowell of Grand Raids, Claudia (Clifford) Ingersoll of Sparta, sisters-inlaw, Dorothy (Michael) Martich of Battle Creek, Margaret Procissi of Florida, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m.

Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Welcome Corners United Methodist Church, (3185 North M-43), Hastings, with Rev. Robert E. Smith officiating. A funeral luncheon and reception will follow the service at the church. Memorials to American Cancer Society.

Arrangements by Wren Funeral Home, Hastings. Gangster leader Joseph Bonanno dead at 97 Associated Press TUCSON, Ariz. Joseph Bonanno, the notorious gangster known as "Joe Bananas" who ran one of the most powerful Mafia groups in the 1950s and '60s, died Saturday. He was 97. Bonanno, who retired to Arizona in 1968 and had suffered from several health problems in recent years, died of heart failure, said his attorney, Alfred "Skip" Donau.

At the height of his power, Bonanno directed one of the five original crime families in New York City. The public knew him as "Joe Bananas" a nickname he detested. By his own admission, he was a member of "the Commission," Pastor Michael Lutz Hickory Corners H. Michael "Mike" Lutz, 66, of Hickory Corners, formerly of Scotts, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 10, 2002, after a brief illness. Mike was born October 30, 1935, in Newton Township to Harold M.

and Iva Ann (Owen) Lutz. He graduated from Athens High School, Owosso. College, Spring Arbor College and worked on an MA in Educational Administration at Western Michigan University. He was a teacher for many years in Constatine, Union City and Athens Schools and was an administrator in Athens and at Vicksburg Sunset Lake Elementary. During this time and throughout his life, he was very involved with young people, both in Sunday School and as a Youth Pastor.

In 1980, he left the educational system in response to a call to full-time ministry. He was one of the founders and first director of the Crisis Pregnancy Center (Pregnancy Care Center) in Kalamazoo. He served as an Associate Pastor and later Senior Pastor at Agape Christian Church in Kalamazoo. In 1997, he became a Senior Pastor at Victory Life Church (formerly Battle Creek Area Christian Fellowship), Battle Creek. On June 24, 1963, Mike married Jamie Moore in Pasadena, California.

In additional to Jamie, he is survived by daughters, Susonrae (Scott) Salters, Kristy (Tim) Dirks of Plainwell, sons, Shawn Michael (Terri) Lutz of Brooklyn, Jeremiah Michael (Holly) Lutz of Delton, grandchildren, Nicholas, Courtenay and Hailey Dirks of Plainwell, Naomi Grace Lutz of Delton, sister, Elsie (Marvin) Simmons of Athens, nephew, Randy (Robin) Simmons of Scotts, nieces, Julie (Chris) Kerns of Schoolcraft, Dawn Simmons of East Leroy and Lindsey Simmons of Vicksburg, great nieces, Taylor, Maia and Zoe Kerns of Schoolcraft. Mike a devoted husband, father and grandfather, will be greatly missed by his family and the many people whose lives were touched by this warm, loving man. He was a pastor who encouraged, accepted and loved people, especially the children and youth for whom he cared so deeply. He always made room for everyone and blessed many lives with his love for Jesus. Friends may call at Shaw Funeral Home after noon on Tuesday, family will be present from 2:00 4:00 p.m.

11 a.m. in Clarence Hollis J. Lackey "Joe" Coldwater Hollis J. "Joe" Lackey, 80, of Coldwater, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Battle Creek Health Systems, He was born February 22, 1922, in East Troy, Wisconsin, the son of Theron and Katherine (Farrell) Lackey. Joe served in the U.S.

Army during 1 II and received an Honorable Discharge. He married Marthe Dobler April 1, 1952, in Angola, Indiana, she survives. He came to Coldwater in 1952, and worked for Tri-State Industrial al Services. He drove a truck and worked for Eaton Manufacturing for many years. He also drove a school bus in Branch County for a short time.

He is also survived by sons, Mike (Sue) Lackey of Woodstock, Illinois, John (Nancy) Lackey of Coldwater. Tom (Brenda) Lackey of Sturgis, Rod (Deborah) of daughters, Gail (Andy) Remogna of Cary, Illinois, Peggy Lackey of Coldwater, Mary Beth "Skip" and Dan Davis of Coldwater, and nine grandchildren. Mr. Lackey donated flags all over Branch County. He was a member of VFW, 40 ET 8, Coldwater American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

Joe provided the Korean and Vietnam Memorial to the City of Coldwater, which stands in the Four Corners Park. He was a City Councilman for eighteen years, retiring in 2001. He was a BATA Board Member, past PTA President, a member of the Branch County Democratic Party and was awarded Branch County Man of the Year in 1991. He loved to hunt, fish and ride motorcycles. He fed the birds, squirrels and was a horse lover.

At one time he had been a stock car driver and a rodeo cowboy. Later in his life he bungie jumped and did a parachute jump. Visitation will be Monday, May 13, 2002, from 5:00 8:00 p.m. at Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater. Services will be 11:00 a.m.

Author dies Associated Press David Riesman, an author and sociologist whose millionselling "The Lonely Crowd" was quoted by everyone from teachers to Bob Dylan, has died. He was 92. Riesman died Friday in a nursing home in upstate New York of natural causes, his son Michael Riesman said. A Harvard graduate with a background in law and science, Riesman published "The Lonely Crowd" in 1950 with the assistance of Nathan Glazer and Reuel Denney. Lillian L.

Schira "Lil" Battle Creek Lillian L. "Lil" Schira, 76, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Battle Creek Health Systems. She was born August 25, 1925, in Detroit, the daughter of Robert and Loretta (Burns) Hallett. She graduated in 1943, from Lakeview High School, where she was President of her Class and President of the National Honor Society. Lillian was a 1946 graduate from Mercy College of Nursing in Detroit.

She was employed at Leila Hospital, the office of Finch, Morrison and McCuaig and had worked at Easter House. She married Gerald L. Schira, January 10, 1953, in Battle Creek, he survives. She is also survived by, sons, Mike (Jane) Schira of Vulcan, Michigan, Chuck (Mary) Schira of Portage, daughter, Ann (Ken) Alexander of Anderson, Indiana, sisters, Margaret Levitt and Loretta Dugan both of Battle Creek. She is the beloved grandmother to ten granddaughters, one grandson and two great-grandsons.

Many nieces, nephews, their spouses and children were special to her. She was a charter member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of the church funeral choir and St. Mary Cecelia Unit of the Altar Society.

She had been a volunteer at Mercy Pavilion and the Red Cross in Manistee. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Monday, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 4:00 p.m. Monday.

"Pat" Brown and mother of Gov. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown died Thursday of natural causes, said Jodie Evans, a longtime political aide and friend of Brown's son, who is now mayor of Oakland. "Bernice Brown was a saint; she brightened the lives of everyone she touched," Gov. Gray Davis, who was Jerry Brown's chief of staff when he was governor, said in a statement.

Brown worked alongside her husband in all three of his campaigns for governor, as well as his successful bids for San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general. Battle Creek 962-5527 Man accused of taping family Associated Press SAGINAW A Saginaw County man has been charged following accusations he used a hidden camera to videotape more than 10 people, mainly family members, in the bathroom at his home. District Judge Kyle Higgs Tarrant on Thursday arraigned Michael J.

Jerry, 30, on two counts of installing an eavesdropping device in a bathroom, a single count of possessing an eavesdropping device and a single misdemeanor count of possessing child pornography. Investigators say Jerry used a Sony clock radio containing a wireless video camera to record his grandmother, a 6- year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, three teen-age girls and five women. State Police Sgt. Christopher Luty said the victims are "immediate or extended" family members. In February, officers seized a computer, disks, CDs, the clock radio with the camera, a VCR and some videotapes.

Jerry, of Thomas Township, is free on bond. He could not be reached for comment Saturday. A May 22 preliminary hearing has been set. Jerry faces up to two years in prison if convicted. Deputies shoot, kill robbery suspect Associated Press COLON An armed robsuspect was shot and killed by St.

Joseph County Sheriff's deputies Saturday, department officials said in a statement. According to a statement released by the sheriff department, the shooting happened at about 9 a.m. in the village of Colon, about 25 miles southeast of Kalamazoo. Deputies spotted the suspect, whose name has not being released, in Colon Township. The suspect was shot by deputies and died at the scene, the statement said.

No other details were released Saturday. The incident is being investigated by the Colon Police Department, the Michigan State Police and the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department. More information is expected to be released Monday, the sheriff department said. which acted as an organized crime board of directors in New York and other major U.S.

cities. He denied engaging in such "unmanly" activities as narcotics trafficking or prostitution, though authorities said otherwise. Bonanno fell from grace during the 1960s, reputedly for trying to become the boss of bosses in what came to be known as "the Banana War." The battle among the crime families resulted in his eventual exile to Tucson. His crime family still bears his name, though he maintained in his 1983 autobiography that "I'm not a Father anymore and there is no Bonanno Family anymore."
