SATURDAY, DEC. 20, 1986 BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER Obituaries Jennie Parlin oldest-known ATHENS Jennie Parlin, 110, formerly of the Athens-Fulton area and the Battle Creek area's oldestknown resident, died Friday at the Arrowood Nursing Center in Battle Creek. She had been in failing health for the last several years. She was born Medina, Ohio, on Feb. 29, 1876.

She had lived in rural Athens all of her life except for five years in Canada. She was a homemaker. During Battle Creek's sesquicentennial celebration, she was awarded a plaque for being one of the city's oldest residents. "Old age just happens," she said at age 94. "But keep busy, work hard and live a clean life," she advised.

As a child, she grew up with Indian playmates who lived on the Athens Indian reservation. In her early days, she and her mother colored Easter eggs by tying a piece of calico around the egg, then soaking it in lye water, which transferred the color of the cloth to the egg shell. dies at 110, area resident During her life, she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, knitting and watching television, particularly panel shows. But she didn't care for soap operas. "You don't learn anything and the people in them always have so much trouble," she was once quoted as saying.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Dewitt Parlin, in 1958, and two sons and two grandchildren. Surviving are daughters, Bondalyn Harrison of Fulton and Gertrude Lowing of Apache Junction, sons, Liston, Newell and Loren Parlin, all of Athens, and Oliver Parlin of Leonidas; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and 32 greatgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Memorials can be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the charity of choice.

Carl H. Spencer dies; retired in 1972 as city police captain Carl H. Spencer, 76, of Lakeland, retired captain of the Battle Creek Police department, died Wednesday in a hospital in Lakeland. A native of Defiance, Ohio, Spencer joined the Battle Creek Police Department in 1943. He was promoted to sergeant in 1948, to lieutenant in 1952, and to captain in 1954.

He retired from the department in 1972, and moved to Florida four years ago. He was a member and former chairman of the Calhoun County Safety Commission, and was founder bicycle safety parade for children, which started in 1949 with 26 contestants, and had more than 1,000 participants when the program was phased out. He also was a former member and past president of the Battle Creek Exchange Victor W. Hawkins Victor Wilson Hawkins, 73, of Sebring, and formerly of Battle Creek, died Dec. 11 in the Florida Hospital in Orlando, Fla.

He was born in Vermontville and moved to Battle Creek with his family at the age of 11. He was employed by the old Ashley Dairy Eaton Parts Processing and Plus Valves Co. until it closed. He resided in rural Barry County before moving to Manistique, where he was custodian of First United Methodist Church. He moved to Sebring in 1980, and was a member and custodian of First United Methodist Church there.

He is survived by his wife, Freda Hawkins; a son, Richard, of Battle Creek; sisters, Fern Yoder of Dowling and Violet Cox of Ormond Beach, six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were Monday in Sebring First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by StephensonNelson Funcral Home, Sebring. Burly's FARM MARKET 99 E. COLUMBIA AVE.

E. (Wamser) Luck, 91, of 90 N. Clay Street, Coldwater, died Thursday in her home. She had been in failing health. She was born Napoleon, Ohio, and came to Coldwater in 1939.

She was a special education teacher for 22 years at the former Coldwater State Home and Training School, retiring in 1963. She was a Napoleon High School graduate and after receiving her teaching certificate taught in Napoleon public schools from 1914 to 1919. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Coldwater and the church's St. Elizabeth Guild, the Coldwater Garden Club, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Michigan Association of Retired Teachers, the Coldwater Business and Professional Women's Club and the Mothers of World War II.

Her husband, Robert Luck, died in 1942. Surviving are sons, Robert J. and William J. Luck, both of Coldwater, and James B. Luck of El Paso, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Arrangements by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Harry M.

Pendill UNION CITY Harry M. Pendill, 97, formerly of Union City, died a Friday at Arbor Ridge Nursing Home in Galesburg, where he had been a resident since 1980. He had been ill a short time. He born in Girard Township and was life resident of the Union City area. He served in the U.S.

Army in France during World War I. He farmed in the Union City area and worked with Jake Baad Coal Co. in Union City. He retired in 1956 from Clark Knauss Implement Dealer of Union City. He was a member of American Legion Post 196 in Union City.

Surviving are two granddaughters and four great-grandsons. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Union City. Zaharias B. Demetrious Zaharias B.

Demetrious, 81, died Friday at Provincial House. Arrangements are pending at FarleyEstes Funeral Home. Roy E. Stevens Roy E. "Red" Stevens, 58, of Baldwin and formerly of Battle Creek, died Friday at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

The lawsuits allege that Dearborn and Lincoln Park violated civil rights laws, failing to recruit and hire blacks on the same basis as whites by requiring job applicants to have lived in the cities for up to one year. The suits, filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, seek the suburbs from hiring additional workers until they recruit blacks.

Clinic to reopen Monday: A Planned Parenthood clinic, with tighter security, will reopen Monday in Kalamazoo, three weeks after it was burned out of a $700,000 building, officials said Friday. The federal Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have joined local officials in investigating the Dec. 1 blaze that destroyed the building where the clinic had been in busines for seven years. Man arrested after plane evacuated: An Ypsilanti man was arrested Friday on federal bomb threat charges, several hours after forcing the evacuation of an Eastern Air Lines jet and part of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, authorities said. The 21-year-old man's identity was withheld pending arraignment Saturday morning before a federal magistrate in Detroit, said Detective Walter Holowka of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

Both the Eastern jetliner and the airport concourse were evacuated Friday morning after the man allegedly called Eastern officials about a bomb. Club. Reafsnyder Fay A. Reafsnyder, 93, of 1030 E. Columbia died Friday at his residence. He was born in Bloomingdale, and came to Battle Creek in 1971 from there. He had served in the U.S.

Army during World War I as a dispatch rider in France and Germany. He was employed as a mechanic and attendant at a service station in Bloomingdale from about 1950 to about 1970. Before that he had been a farmer. He was a charter member and 50-year member of the Bloomingdale VFW Post No. 1214.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Pearl E. Gilson; three grandchildren, cight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Hutchison, of Plainwell. A son, Dewain F. Reafsnyder, died in 1985. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
