black cloth and a basket of flowers on Wednesday covered the desk of a freshman state representative who died while working out the night before. State Rep. Jerry Kratz, R- Grass Lake, suffered a heart attack while working out on a treadmill Tuesday night, said Pete Lang-ley, his legislative assistant. Langley said Kratz Kratz, 69, was taken to a hospital but could not be revived. Kratz is survived by his wife, Elenor, and four adult children.

Kratz first was elected in November to fill the seat held by state Rep. Mickey Mortimer, R-Horton. He previously was superintendent of the Jackson County Intermediate School District and was a teacher. "While his work in the Legislature had just begun, his career as a public servant was a lifelong commitment," said Republican House Speaker Rick Johnson of LeRoy. "Jerry, will be greatly missed." Johnson said the House would approve a memorial resolution in Kratz's honor today.

Another legislative newcomer, Republican state Rep. Lorence Wenke of Richland Township, said Kratz's background will be missed. "Clearly the state House of Representatives has lost a great deal of educational knowledge," Wenke said. Although Kratz was only at the state Capitol for House session a few days this year, he introduced six bills including one to lower the legal level for drunken driving in Michigan. Kratz was a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the head of the subcommittee that handles the budget Road closed The Kratz file Here's the biography of the late state Rep.

In the Senate Wednesday morning, a group of Democratic and Republican senators spoke warmly of Kratz.

"He was a man of honor. He was respected in his community," said Majority Floor Leader Beverly Hammerstrom, R-Tem-perance. Sen. Nancy Cassis, R-Novi, said she had worked for Kratz in the past. "We just renewed our friendship" with Kratz' election to the Legislature, she said.

"How fragile, how short, life really is." Sen. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, noted that "we have lost a giant of public service." Kratz' death lowers the number of Republicans in the state House to 62. Democrats hold 47 seats. Mortimer said Wednesday that he didn't know whether he will run for the seat after Gov.
