COLLEGE FOOTBALL Sunday, Oct. 30, 1994 Battle Creek Enquirer 3C MSU beats Indiana; No. 1 Penn State rolls Wire Reports Big Ten toe, he finished the scoring on a 1-yard sneak. (At) No. 1 Penn State 63, No.

21 Ohio State 14 Penn State did all it could to hold onto its No. 1 ranking, handing OSU its worst loss in 48 years. Penn State, which already knew No. 3 Nebraska had beaten No. 2 Colorado 24-7, led 35-0 at half-time.

Ki-Jana Carter, who grew up 10 minutes from the Ohio State campus, ran for four TDs and left in the third quarter with the score 49-7. Carter finished with 137 yards on 19 carries. Kerry Collins, the nation's top-rated passer, engineered five long drives and completed 19 of 23 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. The Nittany Lions (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) sent OSU (6-3, 3-2) to its most lopsided loss since a 58-6 defeat in 1946. Only a touchdown in the final three minutes helped the Buckeyes avoid their worst loss since an 86-0 beating by Michigan in 1902.

Illinois 28, (at) Northwestern 7 Johnny Johnson passed for two touchdowns and Simeon Rice dominated defensively as Illinois (5-3, 3-2) survived Northwestern's successful Hail Mary pass to beat the Wildcats. Purdue 21, (at) Iowa 21 Purdue's Brad Bobich missed a 30-yard field attempt wide left with seven seconds to play, allowing Iowa to escape with a tie. wideouts Derrick Mason and Muhsin Muhammad and tight end Bob Organ for 38 yards. And after quickly spelling sore-kneed starter Duane Goulboume, Renaud finished the job with twisting sweeps of eight and six yards. After Indiana's third dropped pass of the quarter, Michigan State took over at its 39 after an ugly punt and immediately moved into field goal range.

A sideline flip to fullback Scott Greene was good for 46 yards. And on fourth-and-eight from the 9, Chris Gardner made it 10-0 with a 26-yarder. After a short toss by Banks was intercepted by cornerback Eric Smedley, the Hoosiers moved 40 yards to cut it to 10-7 on a 2-yard run by Smith. After an Indiana punt, Banks telegraphed another toss to Smedley. His 47-yard TD return gave Indiana a 14-10 lead.

In the second half, after a TD-saving tackle by cornerback Stan Callender forced an Indiana punt, MSU went 95 yards in three plays. Carter got behind a two-deep zone, turned slightly to make the catch and strode down the sideline the 93 yards to make it 17-14. Indiana made it interesting with a 64-yard push in 11 plays, its only serious threat of the half. After a 12-yard quarterback draw by Dit Perles' job safe for season The Associated Press EAST LANSING Michigan State President M. Peter McPherson didn't' even wait for the start of Saturday's; game to make dear that George Perles'; status as coach is safe until the end of-.

the season. McPherson told boosters at the Pres-' ident's Club brunch before the Spartans'; game with Indiana that he plans no coaching change before the last game with Penn State on Nov. 26. "As to Coach Perles, I expect that he; will coach the full season," McPherson said in a statement Perles was grateful for McPherson's, statement i "That's beautiful I'm glad to hear that," he said. EAST LANSING If they couldn't learn to protect a halftirne lead, the plan Saturday was to overcome one.

And the Michigan State Spartans did just that, snapping a three-game losing string and proving there's still some reason to play their final three games this season. George Perles' players rallied with 17 straight points in the last two periods, then held off die Indiana Hoosiers 27-21 in an error-filled Big Ten football struggle. The Spartans moved to 2-3 in Big Ten play and 3-5 overall by moving the football with a big-play offense that netted 462 yards. "I don't know how many times we've been behind at halftime," said Perles, whose teams have led their last 11 games in the second quarter and lost eight of them. "But it was a nice treat to see the kids come back." Especially nice for Perles, who has been under the gun since school president Peter McPherson had required him to achieve an "outstanding" season.

Before a crowd of 60,773, MSU turned ing TDs reminiscent of 1987-90. The defense set up 17 points with three takeaways and held Indiana to 267 yards, including just 76 through the air. In a matchup of redshirt freshmen, tailback Marc Renaud came off the bench and outrushed Hoosier hotshot Alex Smith, the Big Ten leader, 181-100. And despite throwing three interceptions, quarterback Tony Banks hit 15-of-23 passes for 248 yards, including a Spartan-record 93-yarder to wideout Nigea Carter. It didn't help that Indiana's (5-3, 2-3) John Pad was 7-for-20 for 43 yards, or backup QB Chris Dittoe was 3-for-10 for 33.

The Hoosiers' first play was a 42-yard sprint by Smith over left tackle. And when fullback Sean Glover picked up 23 on a draw, it was first-and-goal at the 4. But two plays later, Pad's rollout pass was picked off by cornerback Demetrice Martin seven yards deep and returned to the Michigan State 35. MSU scored in 11 plays, with Banks hitting MIAA back the clocks by forcing turnovers and scor- No. 3-ranked Nebraska beats No.

2 Buffs, 24-7 The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. The poll voters wffl decide, but Nebraska played like the nation's No. 1 team Saturday in a 24-7 victory over Colorado. Quarterback Brook Berrmger, thrust into the spotlight after starter Tommie Frazier was sidelined for the season, directed the offense with precision and the Cornhuskers' defense shut down Colorado's high-powered attack in their crucial Big Eight showdown. The win over the No.

2 Buffaloes (7-1, 3-1) gave the No. 3 Cornhuskers (9-0, 4-0) the inside track to the Big Eight title and Orange Bowl berth, and could vault them over No. 1 Penn State when the polls are released today. Penn State, however, did its part, blasting No. TOP 25 21 Ohio State, 63-14.

Nebraska built a 24-0 lead on Berringer's 30-yard TD pass to Eric Alford with 10:42 left in the third quarter. Colorado, shut out in the first half for the first time since 1992, finally scored on Rashaan Salaam's 6-yard run with 1:06 remaining in the third period. But the Buffaloes, who were averaging 40 points per game, continued to struggle against a swarming defense that had given up only 16 points in its previous three games. Colorado was 0-for-ll on third-down tries and 0-for-4 on fourth down. Nebraska won its 22nd straight game at Memorial Stadium, which was sold out for a record 200th consecutive time, going back to 1962.

The win also snapped the Huskers' 12-game losing streak against top 5 teams since 1987. Berringer completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards and smoothly guided Nebraska's option attack, which had lost its punch after Frazier was lost for the season with a blood clot in his leg after the Huskers' fourth game. But the star of the day was Nebraska's defense, which limited Colorado to 314 yards in total offense, 189 under its average. Salaam, the nation's leading rusher with a 179-yard average, gained 134 on 22 carries, but his only long run was a 41-yarder in the third quarter. Nebraska's Lawrence Phillips, third nationally in rushing with a 154-yard average, gained 86 yards on 25 carries.

Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart, the NCAA's fifth-leading passer, was harassed aU day by Nebraska's defense. He was 12-of-28 for 150 yards, ran 14 times for 24 yards and was sacked three times.
