Lansing State Journal Wednesday, June 26, 1996 5C Price GYMNASTICS Chan orce MVP Teft is shift traieiiti to Jl. sites .,5 j-Ih She comes back later in the day for two more hours of work. Doesn't she get sick of doing sb much gymnastics? "Yes," Teft admitted. "But I think of my goals and if I give up, then I won't be able to make my goals." Her goal to make the Olympics started out as just a goal to hang with her sister, Jenny, now 23, who was in gymnastics. "She became an elite gymnast, but it wasn't as intense as what I'm doing now," Teft said.

She turned out to be so good at it that she's closing in on her Olympic dream. But if she doesn't make it, she'll be OK. In the fall she is going back to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central after taking the last semester off to concentrate on gymnastics. No more correspondence courses, no more gymnastics. Well, no more gymnastics for a while.

A short while. Then it's back to training. The 2000 Olympics are just around the corner. By Jeff Rivers Lansing State Journal At a pivotal time in her career, Olympic hopeful Katie Teft has had to deal with some unexpected changes. When her coach, John Geddert, was fired by Great Lakes Gymnastics, he had to find another place to train his gymnasts.

That place is Spartan Gymnastics at Michigan State until he can open up his new Twistars USA club on Aug. 1 at Lansing Ice Arena. But Teft can't work out at MSU because an NCAA rule prohibits athletes outside of a 50-mile radius from coming to a school to practice. The rule was enacted to keep college coaches from bringing in all the best talent from all over the state to play. "She lives 54 miles away," said a disgusted Geddert.

"We petitioned the NCAA the minute it happened. "I can't even talk to them since now I work for MSU, so I have to go throught a compliance officer-. Dr. (Clarence) Underwood has been fantastic. But he's as frustrated as everyone else at how lackadaisically they have moved." The move to Grand Rapids has cut down the amount of coaching Teft gets.

Only Geddert has been working with Teft. He usually has his staff working with her as well. But the good side is that she doesn't have to commute to Lansing every day. "She is a very happy girl right now," Geddert said. "The training in Grand Rapids may be a blessing in disguise because she doesn't have to travel two hours every day, she gets to sleep in her own bed.

It's been killing me, but it's been a blessing to her." Teft doesn't let much affect her. She trains 6V2 hours a day starting at 7 a.m. She stretches for a half-hour and then works on her vaulting for at least an hour. Then she works on the bars for 45 minutes to hour before moving on to the beam and floor for an hour or so each. She then stretches for about 15 minutes before leaving.

Lansing State Journal Last basketball season, when Okemos High won the Capital Circuit League championship, Jason Price always wanted the ball in his hands. He loved playing in games when the outcome was on the line. So last Saturday in the All-Star game at Flint Powers, it came as no surprise that Price was selected MVP for the Class A-B Red Team that defeated the Blue Team, 116-109. Price, who will play this coming season at Northern Michigan, scored 16 points and turned in his usual superb all-around floor game. He was co-winner last season of the first State Journal Player of the Year Award.

The performence by Price earned him a trip to the Wendy's Classic as one of 10 players on Team Michigan that plays Team Indiana July 13-14 in Columbus, Ohio. Mid-Michigan was also represented by nine other players and two head coaches in the Ail-Star games last Saturday, sponsored by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Havilah Cunningham and Christel Rocha, both of Lansing Catholic, Renae Judd of Olivet and Christie Smith of Portland St. Patrick played on Lansing Catholic coach Paul Cook's Green team that lost to the Purple in overtime, 72-70. Cunningham led her team with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Rocha added seven points, Judd five and Smith one point.

The girls' Class A-B Red team, coached by Ron Mott of Okemos and John Benington of Eaton Rapids, beat the Blue, 87-81. Karin Husbeck of Haslett had eight points and Kristin Rasmussen of Okemos six points and six rebounds for the winners. In the boys' Class A-B game between the Red and Blue, DeWitt's Jason Krieder tallied 15 points and Clay CHRIS HOLMESLansing State Journal Helping hand: John Geddert (left) helps gymnast Robin Howell during a November 1990 practice at Great Lakes Gymnastics. Gym: Rift breaks local gymnastics apart for the last time. "I think it was very rude of the Hartwicks," Katie Teft says.

"But I won't let it affect me." -n Geddert talks about the family-like atmosphere he envisions for the Twistars. He proudly points out the new floor that the 70 families, "moms, dads and kids alike," helped lay the cement for this weekend. Paula Hartwick talks about the recommitment to the family-like atmosphere at Great Lakes. She proudly shows visitors coaches praising every effort- Gymnasts on both sides wonder where their extended family went. "This is too sad," Christiana Yarbrough says, looking around, a much quieter gym than one she fell in love with gymnastics in.

"That's what this is." not sure if this is good for anybody. "I don't know who's right or wrong. This is like a divorce and a lot of kids are caught in the middle." Jill Cornell urges her daughter to call her friends who stayed behind at Great Lakes. "It's too awkward," Kerstis Cornell says. "I mean we talk sometimes, but it's not like it used to be.

"Now, we try to talk about anything but gymnastics and the clubs." Katie Teft, Geddert's 14-year-old star pupil, lived with the Hartwicks four days a week for three years. The Hartwick's house was Teft's training home away from home. Teft used to call Kim Hartwick "my big sister." The Tefts and Hartwicks have not spoken since May 20, the day Geddert walked out of Great Lakes' gym ton Burch of Waverly had two. The Purple team in Class C-D defeated the Green, 98-90. Fowler's Bruce Hunger-ford and Dansville's Brad Tkaczyk each scored six points for the Green.

All-Star games start Thursday ting me go because they want to bring somebody else in without a huge fallout." The somebody else Geddert is referring to is Kim Hartwick. He says the Hartwicks fired him to promote their daughter to head coach. Paula Hartwick says she is currently conducting a nationwide search for a new head coach. She said she does not know if Kim, Michigan State's 1989 Sportswoman of the Year, will apply. "John Geddert's the best coach in the state in my opinion," says Ker-stis Cornell, who has been making the two-hour-plus round trip from Grand Rapids to Lansing to train under Geddert for the last five years.

"He knows what it takes to get the best out of you. "Look at all the champions he's coached. He's proven he knows what it takes." The Great Divider Jill Cornell thought Great Lakes Gymnastics provided the perfect combination for her daughter. "They had John's strength of training balanced by the Hartwick's sense of caring," Jill Cornell says. "Now, I'm "We felt the price we were paying here was too much.

There were too many kids being left by the wayside. "We started this club 18 years ago with the idea of providing a positive gymnastics environment for everybody. Under John we found ourselves moving farther and farther away from that idea." Ingrid Yarbrough pulled her 13-year-old daughter Jennifer out of Great Lakes after she says Geddert repeatedly called Jennifer "useless" every time she missed a step on a routine. The Hartwicks said they asked Geddert to cut back the hours he had the gymnasts training and he refused. "John has an intense desire to beat somebody," Paula Hartwick says.

"I think that's how this mess started with in the first place." Geddert says the Hartwicks are simply attempting to justify letting him go. "It does bother me, but it's not true," Geddert says. "If that was true why did every one of my kids come with me. People can draw their own conclussions. "That speaks for itself.

If 70 families have that much confidence in me, I must be doing something right." "Look, they can't say they're let Continued FROM 1C tan Gymnastics waiting for the Aug. 1 target dateifor the new facility. Others, like Yarbrough, stayed at Great Lakes. "Families that have been friends for 25 years, families whose kids grew up together in this gym won't even talk to each other anymore because of this," says Ingrid Yarbrough, Christina's mom. "I know it sounds crazy.

It is crazy. "Sometimes I want to just scream, 'Don't you people realize fnis is just This is a sport. These are kids. It's supposed to be fun." The Split The Hartwicks hired Geddert as Great Lakes' head coach in 1984. In their 12-year partnership, the club's gymnasts won more than 50 state championships, 11 individual national championships and five all-around national championships.

At one time, Great Lakes was the No. 1 rated club team in the country. "We want a national caliber club," Paula Hartwick says. "But not at the expense of the kids. "Carl finished last in the 100-meter finals during the trials," Hunt told KRJV-TV. "That's the big rea son he wasn't chosen to be one of the top four. I consider Carl to be the greatest track and field athlete ever, including Jesse Owens, but how do you pass Jon Drummond, Dennis Mitchell, Mike Marsh or Le-roy Burrell in favor of Carl?" Lewis, who qualified in the long jump, declined a spot as an alter nate after Hunt selected Burrell, the world-record holder in the 100. "I think Leroy is the greatest second-leg runner in the history of track and field and his marks prove that," Hunt said. "The guy has been injured.
