Van Fleet, who getting ready help the Greek army in its fight against Communist guerrillas. The new 275-million-dollar loan to Greece asked this week of Congress is to provide more machine guns and mountain artillery and to increase the Greek army and militia to abcut 200,000 men. The State department and high ranking army officers do not minimize the threat of real trouble in the Balkans, but have confidence that the military genius of General Van Fleet will bring about the defeat of the guerrillas. This government's No. 1 soldier now in Greece is the victor of innumerable fights against the Germans and one of the army's best tacticians.

He was selected by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and George C. Marshall, secretary of state, for the highly irri- oortant role of master-minding Greek army operations. Van Fleet fought the Germans at Meuse-Argonne during World War when a youngster just out of West Point. A star halfback at the academy, he became head football coach at the University of Florida in the '20s when detailed there as a professor of military science and tactics.

The 55-year-old army officer led the 8th infantry regiment ashore at Utah beach in June, 1944, and fought through the Normandy campaign. His troops helped capture Brest. Later as commander of the 90th division, the thrice-wounded general's trcops captured Metz and crossed the Moselle and Saar rivers in one of the' key actions of the war. Later the 90th division took part in the Allied counteroffensive in the Battle of the Bulge. Big Van then assumed command of the 3rd corps and his troops encircled a key Ruhr area taking 105,000 Nazi prisoners.
