Either Gass regional final at Bangor or Class A regional final at Kellogg Center Arena (WBCK-930 AM) BOXING THOMAS HEARNS wants Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Instead, he is getting Iran Barkley.

Hearns said Wednesday he will defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title against Barkley on June 6 at the Las Vegas Hilton. What Hearns really wants is a rematch with Leonard or Hagler, the only fighters who have beaten him in his 47-bout pro career. Neither fighter seems to want a rematch, though. "It's a burning feeling inside, almost a hate-type thing," Hearns said. "I don't like to feel that way, but I want to do terrible things to them.

If either guy was here today, I might just haul off and slap them." PAUL THORN of Okolona will fight Roberto Duran in Atlantic City, N.J., on April 14, according to Thorn's agent. BASEBALL BASEBALL'S RULES COMMITTEE agreed to implement the new rules on the strike zone and balks on a one-year trial basis, a week after having rejected the same proposal. The rules clarify that a pitcher must come to a complete stop in the stretch position and also allow umpires to call higher strikes. They also redefine when an umpire can eject a pitcher for throwing at a batter. DETROIT TIGERS snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating Pittsburgh 10-4 as Darrell Evans drove in three runs and Eric King allowed one hit in five innings.

Evans had an RBI grounder during a three-run third and singled in two runs during a three-run fourth. THREE SAN DIEGO pitchers combined for a four-hitter and catcher Benito Santiago hit his first home run of the spring as the Padres hammered the Chicago Cubs, 1 1-0. BASKETBALL NORBY WALTERS, New York sports agent, will stand trial May 9 in Tuscaloosa, on state charges stemming from his dealings with former Alabama basketball players Derrick McKey and Terry Coner. Walters appeared in court to answer a misdemeanor indictment for violation of the state's deceptive trade practices act, commercial bribery and tampering with a sports event. Walters, also a major figure in the entertainment industry, declined any comment after his court appearance was released on $2,000 bond.

MICHAEL JORDAN scored 25 points, but Washington's John Williams equaled his career high with 28 to lead the Bullets past 7 Chicago, 106-103. In other NBA action, Charles Barkley scored 36 points to lead Philadelphia over New York, 1 15-108; Karl Malone's 29 points helped Utah beat Dallas, 120-105; Buck Williams got 30 points to lead New Jersey over Milwaukee; Mike Mitchell's 3 1 points led San Antonio over the L.A. Clippers, 1 13-1 10; and Walter Davis scored 21 as Phoenix beat Golden State; 118-112. EXTRA BASES MICKEY THOMPSON, an auto speed king and one of the most innovative men in motor sports, was shot dead in an ambush in his driveway outside his Bradbury, home. The bodies of Thompson, 59, and his wife Trudy, 41, were found at dawn by Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputies responding to reports of gunfire.

"It was a double homicide, an assassination," said Deputy Richard Dinsmoor. ATLANTA AND will likely be recommended as sites for the 1996 Summer Olympics by the U.S. Olympic Site Selection Committee, a published report said. The Atlanta Constitution and The Atlanta Journal said the two cities would be invited to make formal presentations to the U.S. Olympic Committee's House of Delegates next month.

STEPHI GRAF, the defending champions, and Gabriela Sabatini were among the second round winners at the Lipton International Players Championships in Key Biscayne, Fla. SUSAN BUTCHER left the competition behind on the icy Bering Sea Coast and mushed through bone-chilling wind to claim her third straight victory in the 1 1 50-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Butcher, 33, collected a $30,000 first prize by urging her nine-dog team into the finish chute at 8:43 p.m., hours ahead of her closest rival in the 16th annual Anchorage-to-Nome trek. She had been on the trail for more than 1 1 days. Compiled from The Associated Press NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division Pet.
