1 June 1, 2008 Battle Creek Enquirer 3B POLICE AND FIRE REPORT Frances Thornton Stutzman Agnes "Aliy" "Aggie" Kulish Colon Frances Thornton Stutzman was born in Pullman, WA, on January 18, 1912, the eldest of the three children of Jesse and Nellie Thornton. The family moved to Ann Arbor, MI, where her father was an English professor her mother a librarian at University of Michigan. Frances and her siblings spent many happy summers at their grandparents' farm 111 Sherwood, MI; her love of country life would be instilled in her children in years to come. Frances graduated from the University High School and then from the University of Michigan where she majored in education. While at Michigan, she pledged Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, an organization in which she was active well into her nineties.

Frances met a fellow student at the University, King C. Stutzman, and they married in 1936. The couple moved Chicago where lived in Hyde Park and raised their two sons, Peter and Timothy. Although they had moved to Illinois, King and Frances remained connected to their Michigan roots as active supporters of the University of Michigan, attending almost every home football game since 1945. King worked in the home furnishings department of Marshall Field Company, and Frances worked in the administration of the University of Chicago.

At a time when few women worked, Frances served the University for almost 35 years. Her first position was with Senator William Benton, then a Vice-President of the University; her second was as secretary to the Dean of the Biological Sciences School. She then became Coordinator of Special Events, a position created especially for her. She greeted prominent individuals and foreign dignitaries, and planned and organized special dinners and conferences. Among those she welcomed were the Emperor of Japan, Prince Philip of England and the King of Sweden.

By dint of hard work, enthusiasm, and a keen talent for connecting with others, Frances excelled in her field. In the commemorative book given to her at her retirement, the late esteemed author Norman MacLean wrote: 'For a long time I have known that great institutions like the Forest Service and the University of Chicago are run by five or six women behind the scenes. For an even longer time, I have known that you have been one of the five or six running the University of Chicago. What a you have greapon retiring, the couple moved to Wilmette, IL, where they have lived for the last 27 years. 'Frannie', as her friends and loved ones call her, was actively inin the University of Chicago Service League, the Wilmette Chapter of the Board of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, continued taking French classes until her passing.

She was universally liked by all her friends and fellow employees, and was famous for her wit, good humos, and her boundless energy. is survived by her husband of almost 72 years, King, her sons Peter and Timothy (Martha) Stutzman, of Wilmette, and three grandchildren, Molly (Jorge) Miranda of Cambridge, MA, Kenneth Stutzman of Wilmette, and Gene Stutzman of Wheeling, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Thornton, her sister, Iona Eggleston, and her nephew, Jesse Thornton.
