An example of the historical authenticity of Mrs. Lynch's work is the restored mural depicting Old Capitol's construction. The viewer sees architect John F. Hague in the foreground collaborating with Father Mazzuchelli, a student of classical architecture who assisted in its design. Behind the main figures, the many men hauling huge stone blocks indicate the amount of heavy hand labor required to complete the building.

While Bailey's interest in the paintings is primarily as works of art, he, too, is aware of their historicaf implications. Although he is from the West coast and his wife, Barbara, comes from Chicago, they have a special interest in Iowa City history as Barbara is Benjamin Shambaugh's grandniece. The original work of art is preserved, and the painter gains insight into the reasons for the painting's deterioration and can devise a means of preventing the same flaw in his own work. After working with the Old Capitol painting, for example, Bailey concluded that heavy-weave cotton, which the artist used as a canvas, should not be overlaid with thin paint because it is extremely difficult to clean.

Bailey has finished restoring the second painting, the 10-by-7-foot mural of the state of Iowa, in his spare time while studying toward an M.A. degree in art conservation, supervising laboratories two days a week, and painting at home. Although this mural is larger, he found work on it less time-consuming than the first one because the canvas and pigments were more compatible. The young painter became aware of the need for methods of preserving paintings while teaching at the University of Minnesota, Duluth when he noticed talented students in his classes ignoring certain standard practices that would insure the normal longevity of their works. Some oil paintings, he observed, deteriorated within five years because of careless craftsmanship.

After meeting Professor Bur-ford, he came to Iowa to study the problems of art conservation. Burford, a member of the faculty since 1947, has been interested in methods for the preservation of paintings for 20 years. He has restored works ranging from a group of murals painted in 1929 by Grant Wood for the walls of the Hotel Chieftain's Corn Room in Council Bluffs to Miro's oil painting "Rosalie," owned by the university. In 1964, Burford and Selber- ling established a laboratory for experimentation in art conservation. Because of the scarcity of art conservationists in this country and the growing need for people skilled in the field, Burford suggested that UI offer an intensive program in conservation.

The suggestion was put into effect last year, placing UI among the first U.S. universities to offer a complete conservation curriculum. The program includes courses in the use of scientific equipment for examining old paintings and a thorough study of chemistry and the physics of light as well as a grounding in the more traditional area of the field. Young Lasansky, a freshman it UI, stresses particularly the need for strong supports, called stretchers, in back of the canvas. Lasansky has made the backing for both restored Pelzer paintings in addition to re-finishing the frames.

Since he was 12 years old, Lasansky, the son of Prof. Mauricio Lasansky, has built frames for his father's prints as well as stretchers and frames for his own paintings. He plans to finish the frame for the Iowa mural in the same way he covered the first Pelzer frame, with gold leaf. The entire process, from the coating of the wood with a mixture of burnt-sienna pigment and boiled rabbit-skin glue to the application of the gold leaf and burnishing of the finished product, takes approximately 20 hours. Lasansky would like to take as many courses as possible in conservation.

He is particularly interested in the restoration of framPS.
