Boatmen's Bank Building t. I i ently you would act how more impressive your conduct would be. If you could place yourself in the position of the advertiser who reads your letter of application in response to his "help wanted" advertisement, how markedly more effective the presentation of your qualifications would be.

How many more calls for interviews you would receive. When you are writing a letter in response to a "help wanted" advertisement appearing in this paper, you are painting a picture of yourself in the mind of the advertiser. He does not know you, and your letter is his only means of judging you. Aim to convey to your prospective employer a desirable picture of yourself. Make it your business to attract the reader.

Winning him means locating a prospective employer of your services. It may mean more than that. It may provide you with the basis for a career. "We normally receive more than one hundred letters in response to our advertisements for ordinary positions," declared an Employment Manager of a large automobile company to me yesterday. "It is practically impossible to read them all.

We have only one method available of establishing the fitness of the candidates, and that is by the mental pictures they yield through their letters of application. "Letters that bear good appearances naturally speak well for their authors. To select the employe we desire, we resort to what you might call a weeding-out process. The best looking letters we select for attention. We do that because in the well-appearing letters we have the keys to the applicants ability, education and experience.

From the neat letters we choose for later reading only those whose qualifications we believe meet the requirements for the vacancies." i My talks with large and small employers and those who read the letters of application for them, employment agency proprietors and officials prove this procedure to be common. Because the advertiser has not seen you, he is compelled to rely on your letter until the interview. If you are qualified for the position for which you have applied, have supplied the information requested in. the advertisement in your letter and if pie letter is neat, clear and forceful, you will receive a call for an interview.
