A-4 THE STATE JOURNAL Sect. 18, 1977 By FRANCIS DERON wreaths of paper flowers from Communist party and government groups were displayed. Once through the main door at the north 'entrance to the memorial, the visitor sees a huge, white-marble statue of Mao. His expression serene, he sits facing Tien An Men, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, and the monument to the "heroes of the people," its platform covered in flowers. On either side of the statue were other wreaths from the central organs of the party and state.

AT statue's feet stood out a wreath laid by the North Korean ambassador to Peking, with verses in Mao's honor on wide black ribbons. The visitors then entered the main hall, where Mao lies in a coffin of clear crystal, his head towards the south. He is dressed in his usual blue-grey suit with the familiar high collar. A red Chinese Communist party flag with the yellow hammer and sickle covers the body to the chest. AT THE head of the coffin, four 6-foot-tall soldiers of the 8341 Mao's personal bodyguard, stod at attention, dressed in the army's green uniform with white gloves, with bayonets fixed to their rifles.

The crystal coffin was surrounded by a carpet of flowers. All around the hall were small pine trees, the symbol of eternity, in plant pots. On the white-marble wall at the coffin's head were inscribed in gold characters the words, "Eternal glory to the great leader and teacher Chairman Mao Tse-tung." THE VISITORS walked slowly down the hall, inlaid with precious woods and marble, on either side of the coffin. They left the mausoleum by the south entrance, facing Chienmen Gate at the south of Tien An Men Square. On the square were parked dozens of buses that had brought the hundreds of representatives of the Chinese people to pay their respects to Mao.

Agence France-Presse PEKING Chairman Mao Tse-tung, his face natural but emaciated, lies in a sumptuously decorated hall of the mausoleum built in Peking to keep his memory alive in future generations. Foreign residents in Peking, including newsmen and diplomats, visited the memorial recently and moved slowly in line past the late chairman's crystal coffin.
