PAGE SIX- ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1963 Succeeds Ruth Helmkamp Miss Jo Ann Boren Crowned Wood River Harvest Queen Miss Jo Ann Roren. senior, was crowned Harvest Queen of Wood River High School in Memorial gym Saturday night. The retiring queen is Miss Ruth Helmkamp. The gym was decked out like an Egyptian court complete with soldiers, slaves and royal performers. Maids were: Miss Lana Brown, Miss Marlene Sue Phillips, Miss Justine Vroman and Miss Sharon Kay Walts.

William Allen Shortal, football captain, escorted the queen to the throne. The retiring queen was escorted by Gary Griffith. the maids were Lawrence Davis, Robert Fisher, Martin Mellor and William Wish- linski. Members of the school's gymnastic team, who performed for the court, were Richard Calame, David Dlsher, James Greer, David Gunter, Gary Hartstock, Terry Haydon, Lonnie McCoy and Earl Tomblingson. The band played "The Grand Procession" and "Exodus" and accompanied the choir.

Members of the Girls Glee Club sang "The Song of Egypt," and the choir sang "You Are Love," "Desert Song" and "El Hiverih Haglil" an Egyptian song which added to the atmosphere of the court. Miss Gloria Newlum sang a solo of "Long Ago and Far Away." Miss Judy Maguire performed a baton solo entitled "The Priestess of the Twirling Lights." Other members of the royal court were: Robert Gibson, herald; Lester Brooks III, minister; Thomas De Gerlia, equerry; and Charles Colclasure, messenger. The faculty staff in charge of the prom were: Thomas Samples, director; Miss Helen Christoe, assistant director; Richard Claridge, stage directo; Marion Strohman, art director; Chester Hughes, band director; Miss Mildred Smith, chorus director; Chester Paul Cook, printing supervisor; Clifford Ohlsen, lighting crew chairman: Miss Mary Van Fossen and Miss Sue Wilen- son, accompanists. Building Float Members of the Junior Bowlers of the Wood River Moose Lodge are building a float for entry in the Alton Halloween parade Oct. 31, it was announced today by Mike Dosen and Don Bollman, Moose civic affairs and Junior bowling co-chairmen. Betty Elfred of Fairmount Addition, wife of F. Stillman Elfred. Peabody Coal board chairman, and former executive vice president of 01 i Mathieson, died Sunday at 8:10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Hospital following a long illness.

Mrs. Elfred had lived In Alton since the retirement of her husband from Olin Mathieson In 1958. Previously she had been in New York and Hollywood. A former screen star in the days of the silent movies, Mrs. Elfred had been a leading lady in silent pictures with the late Gary Cooper and Tom Mix.

Her screen name was Betty Jewel. She had been first married to the late M. A. Schlessinger, head of the Schlessinger Enterprises in South Africa. Mrs.

Elfred had traveled extensively before coming to Alton. She had been to Africa numerous times and had made several trips around the world. She had been interested In numerous charitable organizations to which she had contributed much of her time and talent. Surviving in addition to her husband are a step-daughter, Mrs. Rodman A.

St. Clair of Mrs. Miller Rites Conducted Funeral rites for Mrs. Virginia Saxton Miller, widow of Jack Miller, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Marks Mortuary, Wood River, by the Rev.

Robert Simpson. Burial was in Milton Hill Cemetery. Harold Cooper, Glen Saxton, Gerald Baker, Richard Henry, W. C. Bugg, and Seldon Russell were pallbearers.

Witaschek Funeral To Be on Tuesday The class, instituted at the request of local automobile dealers and District 9 of the Machinists Union, is oae of two to be held in the area. Another will begin in Belleville. One automobile dealer said there never has been any such training in this area for automotive mechanics outside of St. Louis.

He said that if such apprentice training was not started, auto dealers and garages would soon run out of mehanics as older men retired and younger men were not trained to take their places. Sadie A. Merriman, 82, of Gillespie, wife of Roy Merriman, a former Godfrey resident, died Saturday in an Alton Hospital. Her marriage to Roy Merriman took place In 1954, at Charleston. Gladys Pearl Wegman, wife of Chauncey Wegman, president of Wegman Electric Wood River, died at 3 a.m. Sunday in St. Anthony's Hospital. She was 66. Mrs.

Wegman had been hospitalized since Aug. 20. She had been a patient for three weeks in St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis, following surgery, and then entered St.

Anthony's Hospital. She was born in St. Louis, Aug. 21, 1896. where she lived until September of 1927 when she moved to Wood River.

Since 1949 she had lived at 273 S. 9th Rosewood Heights. Her marriage to Mr. Wegman took place Sept. 21, 1919, at Murphysboro.

Surviving beside her husband June Robert are a daughter, Mrs. Echols, and two sons, N. Borrow, Bristow, Richard L. Williams, 618 Weiss Newton Okla. Mrs.

Kelly JERSEYVILLE John Kelly. 87, died at 8 p.m. Saturday in Garnet Nursing Home. He was born May 6, 1876, in Jersey County, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.

Hartley Kelly. The only survivors are nieces and nephews. The body is at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends may call after 3 p.m. today. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

this evening. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Xavier Church, conducted by the Rev. Father William Maul.

Mrs. Lucile W. McCormick, a resident of Alton until nine years ago when she moved to Toledo, Ohio, died Saturday at 8 p.m. in a Toledo hospital following an illness of 9 months. She was the wife of F.

A. McCor mick, who is in the engineering department of the Toledo plant of Owens Illinois. The body has been returned to Alton for funeral services Tuesday at 10 a.m. to be conducted in Morrow-Quinn Mortuary by the Rev. W.

Freeman Privett, pastor of Cherry Street Baptist Church. Visiting hours at the mortuary will be after 7 p.m. today. The former Lucile Wright, Mrs. McCormick was born in Alton, May 12, 1901, to the late Frank Wright and the late Mrs.

Melvina Harr Wright Meyer. Mr. McCormick had been affiliated with Cherry Street Baptist Church a number of years ago. She attended the Alton Schools and was graduated from Ursuline Convent Business School. Her marriage to Mr.

McCormick took place in 1934 in Alton. Survivors beside her husband are a son, Donald H. Hill of Brevard, N.C., and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Bosewetter, Alton. A brother, Virgil, and a sister, Mrs.

Charles Bentley, died previously. Benken BRUSSELS Bernard B. Benken, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Alexian Brothers Hospital, St. Louis, where he had been a patient more than a year.

He was a retired merchant in Brussels, where he owned a general store. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Benken, and was born Aug. 13, 1895 in Brussels.

A civil engineer employed here by the firm of Sheppard, Morgan and Schwaab at the time of his death, he had serv ed a total of 16 years as city engineer for the municipality. He was a graduate of Rose Polytechnic Institute of Terre Haute, a practicing engineer for 50 years and had made his home in Edwardsville since 1939, having previously resided at Litchfield. Vincent's Hospital. Taylorville, where he had been a patient for seven weeks. Before moving to Taylorville, two and one-half years ago, Mr. Eden had been employed for six years as a fireman at St. Joseph's Hospital, and prior to that had worked at the carpenter trade for a number of years in Alton area.

He was born March 15, 1885, at Maiden, to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Eden. He moved to Alton at the age of 18. Surviving are a son, Louis, Alton; two brothers, Ruben, Arkansas, and James, East Alton; a sister, Lillian Downs, Bethalto.

The body is at Staten Chapel where services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Porter Estes, pastor of First Church of Christ, Christian, Wood River. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery. Friends may visit the chapel after 4 p.m.
