Bhutto has demanded the release of the 91,000 Pakistanis held prisoner by India since the war, but India says that must depend on Pakistan's recognition of Bors Spassky One purpose of the talks is to patch up differences stemming from India's victory over Pakistan in the two-week war last December that freed East Pakistan Bangladesh. The two leaders also hope to make a start toward improving the general cli state held by India. Bhutto has said the future of Kashmir must be based on self determination by the Kahsmiris. India has always rejected this because most of them are Moslems and probably would vote for independence or to join Pakistan.

l' tt BOBBY FISCHER canceled his flight reservation to Reykjavik, Iceland, where he is to play Russia's Boris Spassky for the world championship of chess. Aides and friends have not been able to establish whether Fischer will show up for the matches which have been the subject of considerable complaints from Fischer. A friend, grandmaster Larry Evans said, "He said he was going." BORIS SPASSKY, meanwhile, has begun to show the pressure he is feeling before the championships. He stalked off a tennis court in Reykjavik when photographers tried to take pictures of him. He protested that they were interfering with his training, but the photographers were not even inside the tennis court area.

Observers noted that Spassky usually displays an icy calm in both training and play. THE REV. THEODORE M. IIESBURGII observed his 20th anniversary as the president of the University of Notre Dame Wednesday. While presiding over modernization of the university, Hesburgh also has gained recognition for his work in civil rights.
