Mackenzie is the exuberant actor-singer-dancer who helped make "Hello Dolly" (another memorable Merrick production) an outstanding Broadway hit for two years he played the bashful clerk of the feed and grain merchant of that show with four of its series of Dollys. For the object of Mackenzie's heart-on heart-interest in "Promise," David Merrick has engaged as the costar a new discovery whom he is grooming for a Broadway appearance the season af-ler this. She is Sydnee Balaber, a young lyrical soprano whom Merrick discovered last summer singing the title role in "Gypsy" in a dinner theatre on Long Island.

Miss Balaber has appeared in some of New York's most fashionable nightclubs The Playboy Club. Upstairs at the Downstairs and Mr. Kelly's. It marked the first stage show with music by Burt Bacharach and lyrics by his teammate Hal David, and based on a book by Neil Simon, the most successful writer of stage comedies in decades. New York theater buffs knew that a Broadway musical with the tricky lhythms that are the trademark of Bacharach, a prince of popular music after writing 192 song hits for eight years, had to be an event and it was.

"Promises" resulted in cidit new hits for Bacharach. including the show's highest success. "I'll Never l-'aU in Love Again." "Love" and "Our Lit lie Secret'" are distinguished by melodies that have underneath them a restrained rhythms, and beneath that another rhythm. Unlike many road company productions which star unknowns, the "Promises" cast coming to Battle Creek will include a majority of the members from the original cast which closed Jan. 31 after a successful three-year run in New-York. And this group is on tour by special arrangement with David Merrick, the show's original Broadway producer.

"Promises," which received rave reviews after its opening, was the most eagerly awaited show of the 196S season in New York. mm mm i.lMWl'ilillilllllillllg I i HI Ivif iQmmhmm 31 I ivrTTT i iij a 1 il 'li: -4 "i 1 IIP Nb -i wmwii Pianist Sharon Ensminger given feature role with WMU symphony There's the rampant Turkey Lurkey number in the ises," which will be presented Friday in W. "I got my first job because I ducked into a doorway to get out of a violent hailstorm in Philadelphia one day," the saturnine basso reports. "I was on my way home from a Roy Scout meeting and had never thought of acting. "But the doorway was the entrance to a neighborhood playhouse where they were casting a show. I ended up as leader of the robots in Ever since, David has been a busy thespian, with a knack for odd roles. He was the only white actor last year in a Negro Ensemble Company production.

He made his screen debut in "Some of My Best Friends Are the only straight character in a film about life among homosexuals. Despite multiple credits and a range of 50 ethnic dialects, most of his work has been far from Broadway. About a year ago his agent persuaded him to do voiCeovers for television commercials, and he's been running ever since. "I always pooh-poohed them," he says, "but they enable me to have time to write poetry and go to other auditions.
