I nave been a booster for Lansing for many years and have tried to help we city grow, nut I am becoming so disgusted with the present city government, and three-fourths of the cttisens who ask holding back the city, that I am gome to move out in the suburbs. We have men by the thousands in Lansing who are making their bread and butter in -the factories and at the same time are Imposing Lansing and Its products and walking around with a face a yard long. Some day. somenow, something will happen to make most of Lansing's citizens realise that the day of the airplane, the radio, fast transportation and progress is at hand, and when that day arrives maybe we will have a new city government. -J.

MUD-SLINGING IS RECENT PRI-mary Campaign Arouses Ire of Addison Man; Is Astonished That Woraen Voters Shared in Warfare Editor. State Journal: Judging from the color of the mud that was In the air during the primary farce one would naturally come to the conclusion, that the state was bone dry, and the prohl's had crawled into the wet camp and gone to sleep; being lullabied by the basso-pro-fondo and contralto voices being carried over the air to the disgust of all thinking people who nave clean pontics at heart. The most astonishing part of the fiasco was the women Joining the chorus with clubs, besting time with a basset-horn, celebrating their tenth anniversary of their franchise. This is what is called clarifying politics, without wine, excepting for the leaders who ferment, bringing discredit upon our form of government. This campaign of mixed sexes con firms the statement more plainly of what our chief executive was forced to admit soon after his inauguration.

that "Life and property in the united States is relatively more un safe than in any other civilized coun try in the world." And surely, such a condition did not exist prior to the year 1920. So far as my observations extend, I can see but the one class who has been benefitted financially since the year 1920, and that is the manufac turers of a commodity which pstor to 1920 they sold at from to top price, but soon after 1920. it took a jump In a night to from (10 to $15 per. and at that, it was sn inferior article by 75 per cent. If this has clarified politics, I will take mine Claret-color.

1930. EXPLANATION OF PROHIBITION Slate Issued by WUliamston W. C. T. V.

Given in Letter to Editor from Members of Christian Citizen Dept. Editor State Journal: I wish to present the truth about the prohibition slate Issued by the Willlsvrriston W. C. T. U.

Four years ago we held a pre-primary meeting and made out a slate of prohibition candidates, the names being sent to us by the state and county officials. We have continued this work each election year and with a growing demand from neighboring towns snd also from Lansing. This year we decided to have the slates printed snd distributed throughout the county. Our reason for issuing the slates was to give temperance voters the name of a prohibition candidate for each office. I wish to state here that the Lan sing W.

C. T. U. had nothing to do with issuing the slates except that the names of candidates were furnished by the county office. I believe they held a meeting at the Temple house and reached about one half of one per cent of the temperance voters, leaving the other 99 'i per cent without any information that would enable them to cast an intelligent temperance vote.

They thus lost a golden opportunity to help the cause of temperance at a critical time, for every election is a critical time in our country's history. Prohibition is the big issue of today and each candidate could have told the voters where he stood on the eighteenth amendment and the Volstead act. In other words he could have put himself across. The W. C.

T. TJ. committee had no political interest in any of the candidates, the slate being Issued merely as a temperance guide. MATILDA BARRACK. Christian Citizen Department, Wllllamston W.

11, 1930. CHICAGO MAN. AFTER SEEING State Jotvnal Editorial in Chicago Paper. Writes of High Real Estate Taxes; Says State Beats Chicago Editor State Journal: I recently read a very able edi torial on another subject quoted from your columns, snd I do wish you would get after real estate taxes In Michigan as incisively and clearly. Real estate taxes in every state I know of have gone wild.

Real estate cannot be hidden or Juggled some way ta book figures. With the rising flood of public expenses, many of them use less so far as the general public Is concerned, legislators have been cudgeled out of seeing who should pay them. But Michigan is the worst of all! It's real estate "valuators" and ner cent fixers went plumb crazy and appear to choose to stay so. The taxes in big and crooked Chicago are literally less on property of equal value than in a small Michigan town. Assessors are presumed to put" a tax-figure on real estate st "its true cash value." Now what in conscience sake is "a true cash value?" Evidently they took the view that it meant a price at which it might selL But a house and lot or farm which might sell at their guess yesterday, may tomorrow be worthless, unsaleable at any price.

What's a factory worth that's shut down, a house or buldlng that doesn't pay net rent over a term of years? Or a farm (like most of 'em) that's a mere grubbery for existence? Why, they put city "values" on property that is In fact a liability, not an asset. Their discernment is dead, unfair, cowardly. Things or persons who make net money should pay the taxes. Against the ordinary parcel of real estate, any taxing sense would find a wsy to mske them nominal. J.

W. Chicago, Sept. 1930. VOTER FOB PROPOSED CITT Charter 'Frwse ta Nsilfrrt Asasag Cstys Says City Lacks ror-ars-leeaiag L-Ttawsss dltor: I am to take this opportunity to publicly declare that I am proud that I was numbered among tne progressive citlams of Lansing who last Tuesday went to the pout ana voted In favor of the proposed city charter. It Is indeed a pleasure to know that you are numbered among Lansing's progressive minority.

I surety wouldn't want to be on the side that voted down the greatest document for better city government that has ever been pre sented In this city. We. ss a city voted down the mod ern charter, the old time city fathers did awar with the voting machines and returned to the paper ballots and now If we will all lunk out automo biles, tear tip the pavements, do away with airplanes, smssh up the radios, get out the phonograph and buy a new horse and buggy we will be liv ing In the same age that our old city charter is adapted for. Also. I want to say that I voted for the paring bonds, but due to the fact that Lansing has more backward citizen than ft has progressive, the paving bonds lost and we will no longer proeres along those lines.

It's a good thing for the automobile in dustry, however, as many springs wui be broken and cars will wear out faster on our present rough streets. I refer especially to Washtenaw and Allegan in the downtown district. Then while I am talking about streets there's another thing. After years of labor, the Logan street viaduct was finally completed, but still the approaches to this beautiful span are so unbearably rough that it nearly breaks one's neck to go over them in low gear.
