Now trees planted by Fernandez cover almost two acres. First, Fernandez planted trees next to his barber shop in the Navy Exchange Building. He had to water them constantly and protect the budding seedlings from harsh winds. And to the surprise of his Navy cohorts, the trees grow. Next Fernandez crossed the road next to his shop and started a grove of trees which has become known as "Felix" Forest." Fernandez' experience with growing things goes back to his farming days in the Philippine Islands before he joined the U.S.
