(AP) The Johnny Ap-pleseed of San Nicolas Island has left behind a growing legacy on this barren windswept spit of land. Felix Fernandez, a retired Navy barber, liked trees and for reason began planting them when he arrived here in 1965. There was only one tree then on the 3-by-10-mile island lying 65 miles off the Southern California coast.

Now trees planted by Fernandez cover almost two acres. First, Fernandez planted trees next to his barber shop in the Navy Exchange Building. He had to water them constantly and protect the budding seedlings from harsh winds. And to the surprise of his Navy cohorts, the trees grow. Next Fernandez crossed the road next to his shop and started a grove of trees which has become known as "Felix" Forest." Fernandez' experience with growing things goes back to his farming days in the Philippine Islands before he joined the U.S.
