CRYSTAL LAKE: ANNUAL SCHOOL RACE Lundahl students push Teams embark By BRETT ROWLAND CRYSTAL LAKE Fourty-four Lundahl Middle School students braved the cold to test their athletic prowess and team skills in a marathon-length fitness challenge Friday. The eighth-graders, in 11 co-ed teams of four students, raced 12 miles on foot, biked 7.55 miles, did orienteering, team-building and in-line skating for 4.25 miles, and canoed for 2.4 miles on Main Beach in an epic physical endurance test.

This was the eighth year that the school had the event. Each member of the team participated in every part of the event, which took them around Crystal Lake with checkpoints at each of the 12 schools in District 47. To participate, students had to submit a three-page application, complete 10 hours of community service, and undergo six weeks of training, 43-year-old organizer and Lundahl physical education teacher Fred Kaiser said. "I've never really done that before." Molly Freemire, 13, was apprehensive about tipping over during the canoe portion of the event, but excited to get started with her teammates. "This just sounded like a challenge I wanted to take on," she said. Six hours later, Freemire and her teammates crossed the finish line in first place, all of them holding hands as they sprinted toward the end. "It was tough," she said, out of breath and showing off a new scrape on her elbow. After the teams crossed the finish line, they celebrated by spraying one another with bottles of faux champagne nonalcoholic sparkling juice and warmed up with slices of pizza.
