He enlisted as an apprentice seaman July 10, 1941, and served on convoy duty on the East Coast. He was released from the service June 20, 1946. He was a student at Iowa State University and had worked as an electrician with Libby Owens Ford. He was a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Shriners, Royal Arch Masons in Ohio. He also was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Toledo, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, James (Susan) Kinzer Jr. of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Richard (Gina) Kinzer of Crystal Lake; his grandchildren, Christopher (Pam) Kinzer, John (Jessica) Kinzer and Lauren and Ellen Kinzer; and his great-grandchildren, Meagan, Morgan, Julia and Olivia. She was born March 13, 1944, in Parsons, Kan. On March 13, 1963, she married Morad Ghadosh. During her early life, everyone knew her as "Kay Kay." She lived every day for her children and her grandchildren. She and her late husband owned a custom jewelry store in Algonquin and Elgin for many years. She closed the store recently to begin her retirement journey.

She is survived by her children, Maria (Rick) Kowis, Melissa (John) Cummings, Michael Ghadosh, Marsha (Joe) Kolek, and Mario (Jarrett) Pautz; her grandchildren, Jason Cummings, Kristen Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Kassi Ghadosh, Helena Ghadosh, Miranda Pautz, and Marissa Pautz; and her siblings, Elnora and Joe. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her siblings, Arden, Carl, Baby John, Beverly and Pearl; and a grandson, Cpl. Ryan J. Cummings. The eighth-graders, in 11 co-ed teams of four students, raced 12 miles on foot, hiked 7.55 miles, did orienteering, team-building and in-line skating for 4.25 miles, and canoed for 2.4 miles on Main Beach in an epic physical endurance test.

This was the eighth year that the school had the event. Each member of the team participated in every part of the event, which took them around Crystal Lake with checkpoints at each of the 12 schools in District 47. To participate, students had to submit a three-page application, complete 10 hours of community service, and undergo six weeks of training, 43-year-old organizer and Lundahl physical education teacher Fred Kaiser said.
