A prowling IJniversity of California music professor's activity has resulted in the Uniyersity's acquisition of two rare musical instruments. Prof. David Boyden "resurrected" one instrument from a seldom-used closet on the Berkeley campus and the 'other from a dusty art collection.

Seven strings of' gut stretch above the bridge and seven wire strings below. The strings that run below the bridge sound sympathetically 'when a bow is drawn across the upper ones. "It is because of these overtones produced by the sympathetic strings fhat the instrument is so difficult to play," Professor Boyden said. He pointed out that the clavichords as an early piano, had the opposite difficulty.

There are no sympathetic sounds and so the player must continually hold note3 by fingering that a modern pianist can do with the foot pedals, he explained.
