METRO BRIEF Gag order imposed at Chicago mob trial CHICAGO The federal judge at the trial of five alleged members of Chicago's organized crime family on Friday imposed a gag order, saying it would "enhance my ability to conduct a fair trial." Judge James B. Zagel's order bars attorneys "from making extrajudicial statements regarding the merits of this case that a reasonable person would believe could be publicly disseminated." He said the order would help him to conduct a fair trial because it was likely any commentary on the merits would prejudice the jurors.

Wire report PLAINFIELD: STEBIC CASE Missing woman's kin urges husband to talk By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press PLAINFIELD- Relatives of a suburban Chicago mother missing for more than two months are urging the woman's estranged husband to speak with investigators and let them interview the couple's two children, a family spokeswoman said Friday. Melanie Greenberg also said she's worried about the children's psychological wellbeing. Her comments came a day after police named Craig Stebic as a "person of interest" in the case, citing in part his refusal to let detectives talk to the children about Lisa Stebic's disappearance. "Lisa's family has always encouraged Craig to cooperate fully with police," Greenberg said. "We need closure.

We need to find out what happened to Lisa." The couple were going through a divorce, but still lived together with their children in the family's Plainfield home. On the day of Lisa Stebic's disappearance, she had mailed off a petition seeking to remove Craig Stebic from their home. He was the last person to report seeing his wife on the evening of April 30. The Stebic children ages 10 and 12 might be able to provide what Greenberg called "vitally important" information. Lisa Stebic, whose 38th birthday was in May, had worked her normal shift in a nearby elementary school cafeteria on the day that she disappeared and was home when her son and daughter arrived from school; at some point that afternoon, the children left on their bicycles to buy candy from a store, Greenberg said.

"When they returned, their mother was gone and has never been seen from again," she said. "What exactly was she wearing that day? They may have seen something that they may not even know is important that police need to complete their investigation." Plainfield Police Chief Donald Bennett said Friday that the "person of interest" designation would not oblige Craig Stebic to speak with investigators or give them any new legal leverage.
