In that winter of 49'50 Jim Grow, Kanaka member of the party, led other members out to buy food; the food party failed to return.

Downie, in the meantime, had packed in food from nearby Goodyear Bar, bought with $3900 worth of gold dug from beneath the snows. Crow later confessed that he and his party had deliberately failed to return, hoping to pick up the accumulated gold if the remaining party members starved to death. For a few years after 1850 Downieville was a heavy gold producer; the population was above 5000 in 1852, A remote camp, hard to'reachj goods were high: sugar brought $4 a pound, shoes and boots sold any where from $25 to $150 a pair. These pictures were made for The Tribune by Robert Stinnett. Tnde "AULTONB" Msdt Reg.
