D-2 THE STATE Fri Aug 18. 1978 One of 3 finalists MSU aide to Idaho? MOSCOW. Idaho (AP) Michigan State University assistant basketball coach Don Monson was one of three finalists for the University of Idaho coach's job who toured the campus Thursday. The others were Denny Huston, University of Washington assistant coach, and Grand Canyon College Coach Ben Lindsay of Phoenix, whose teams took two NAIA national championships. THE UNIVERSITY'S selection committee had been scheduled to decide on a recommendation on Friday but has put its meeting off until next week.

Athletic director Bill Belknap and University President Richard Gibb will decide who gets the job. Last month, coach Jim Jarvis-resigned after the NCAA announced a further investigation of alleged recruiting violations at Idaho. Idaho is nearing the end of a one-year probation for such violations. rr 1 Photos bv Norris tngetls Angels gift-wrap Bosox's 8-6 win Football on its way High school grid openers are just three weeks away and it was down to conditioning drills for teams this week before head-to-head combat starting Aug. 21.

In the other AL games, Minnesota topped Kansas City 6-5 in 10 innings, Detroit pounded Cleveland 9-5; Chicago bested Texas 4-2 and Milwaukee whipped Toronto 6-0. Twins 6, Royals 5 Dan Ford's single off AI Hrabosky delivered Bombo Rivera in the 10th inning, carrying Minnesota to its sixth victory in nine games and handing Kansas City its fifth loss in the last seven.

White Sox 4, Rangers 2 Ralph Garr collected two doubles and a single, drove in a run and scored another to back the combined four-hit pitching of Ken Kravec and Lerrin LaGrow in lifting Chicago over Texas. Toby Harrah's two- run, sixth-inning homer produced the Texas runs. Brewers 6, Blue Jays 0 Don Money cracked two RBI singles and set up another run with a double, backing a five-hitter by Bill Travers and extending Milwaukee's winning streak to five games. By FRANK BROWN AP Sports Writer Bobby Grich set a major league record for second basemen with a .995 fielding average in 1973. He tied the record for fewest errors at his position that season, committing five in 940 chances.

There are other such numbers statistics that make it more puzzling to think that Thursday night, for the second night in a row, a Grich error led to a California Angels loss. "OBVIOUSLY, HE is having his problems." said California Manager Jim Fregosi after Boston beat his An-gps 8 6 and for the second night in a row scored the winning runs without a base hit. "Grich has agreed he has to take a rest." It seems most of the Angels could use a rest. They made three ninth-inning errors Wednesday night and handed the Red Sox a 4-2 triumph. They made two more Thursday, gift-wrapping Boston's 8-6 victory and throwing away a chance to pull even wit Kansas City in the American League's West Division title chase.

Howell Town Country actually jumped to a 3-2 lead after the first inning but Emil's pecked away, scoring single runs in the third on Marc Kibby's triple and Kirk Kennedy's fly ball, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Abie's Angels did things up easy, beating the Lasers 12-2 with an eight-run burst in the fifth inning, then coming back with 12 more runs in the deciding game despite only five hits. KELLY SAID the Capitals will bolster their lineup with the addition of linebacker Ray Went and linemen John Brown and Ray Vanover. "They played last season, and haven't been able to join us until this week," Kelly said. "It should enable us to make some moves we haven't been to before and it should give us more experience, especially Went, who is an outstanding linebacker. That's the area Columbus hurt us in last time." It'll be Kids Night at the game.

The Lansing Capitals head into the final four games of the Midwest Football League season with a measure of optimism. Coach Chris King feels the Capitals have the capability of being the equal of every team in the league. THEIR OWN mistakes, fumbles, breakdowns in the secondary has kept the Capitals sputtering.

In last Saturday's 19-6 loss to Indianapolis, owner Russ Kelly said, "We made it easy for them. We gave them the ball three times on fumbles. Our defense has been playing fairly well, but we haven't been able to put both ends of our game together. When our offense gets going, our defense flops, when the defense plays well, our offense has problems." The Capitals get a second shot at the Columbus Metros at 8 p.m. Saturday at Sexton High's Memorial Stadium.

IN THE July 15 meeting, Columbus piled up 460 yards total offense in ripping the Capitals 40-0. Caps' quarterback Greg McKay was sacked eight times and the Metros' defense held the Caps to minus 26 yards total offense. Columbus owns a 4-1 record and trails unbeaten Kalamazoo (6-0) in the South Division, and stands a game ahead of Indianapolis (4-2). He said reports from Los Angeles that the IOC has made a concession on this point are inaccurate. "NEGOTIATIONS ARE proceeding, and we are trying to see if there is a way of meeting Los Angeles in its difficulties," Killanin said. "But the rules of the Olympic Charter have to be observed. The difficulties with Los Angeles involve Rule 4." Rule 4 says the host city and the national Olympic committee of the host country shall be jointly responsible for running and financing the Games. Two weeks ago Don Kane, president of the U.S.

Olympic Committee, told Los Angeles the USOC would be ready to guarantee a financial loss if the Games are held in the Califomian city. IOC SOURCES have said there is no basic objection to this, provided both Los Angeles and the U.S. Olympic Committee sign a contract. Reports from Los Angeles said Don Miller, executive director of the USOC, and John C. Argue, leader of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, reported a breakthrough in the negotiations over financial responsibility.
