The increase shown in a survey of 10 industrial cities followed a slump in costs during the first quarter and exceeds by 1.6 percent the previous high set in the last quarter of 1051. Since 1941, food costs have 'Jumped 222.0 percent I Major cause of the price increase during the period ending today was an increase in fresh vegetable, pork, sugar and cereal product prices, the survey indicated. Fresh vegetable prices have risen 20 percent since June, 1951, while cereal and bakery products. products, beverages and sug-jar prices are slightly higher, the 'survey showed. Costs of fats, oils and eggs have declined substantially in the past year while meat prices have dropped slightly.

"The Standard" Order Now and Be Assured of Winter Car Shelter I ASK fOI RO HIAIUM MJtVn estimate. Even Next March And the effect of the strike may be felt next March in a pinch of iron ore supplies. The big iron ore boats ply the Great Lakes in sum mer to brine Minnesota ore to the steel mills to be stockpiled for use in the winter when the lakes are frozen.

These boats are idle now because the iron ore workers also are on strike. Total iron ore shipments for the season have been cut about one-tenth by the strike so far. Steel mill stockpiles of ore may be exhausted next March before the boats can start tip their next spring runs. Most businessmen had thought the strike would be halted by government action before this. Therefore, few made any attempt to build up steel inventories before it started.

Out of Balance By lasting four weeks, the strike has thrown industrial inventories out of balance. A shortage in any one special type of steel used by a manufacturer can halt his production even if his inventories of other types of steel remain adequate. With steel inventories mcltine fast, the steel industry is assured now that when the strike ends, the steel mills will be running at full capacity well into next year. 1 his means, among other thincs. that if steel prices are raised after the strike ends, the steel mills are not likely to run into customer price resistance.

The steel mills now will be in a position to pass along any wage boost in the form of higher prices if the government permits it.
