THE BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER AND NEWS Sec. Three Sunday, January 15, 1967 mm VjglyyMI frank Hastings Driver Finishes 3rd Best In Nation in '66 There never has been a No. 1 athlete picked in the Battta Creek and regional area. If such an area choice were to be made for 1966 it certainly would go to Gordon Johncock, race driver from Hastings. Six-A coaches hope the state will adopt the changes in the near future. Competitively, the Six-A has changed its league meet from a long one day endurance run to a two-day affair. The league also has changed its dual meet scoring to comply with national methods by scoring the two relay events 7-0 each rather than 8-4. Also, each school is permitted three entries in individual events but only two from one school can figure in the points earned. This applies to six-lane pools where normally one boy from each school swims pvhihition.

LOCAL GOLDEN GLOVERS Here are the youngsters who will represent Battle Creek in the state regional Golden Gloves tournament that will open Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m., in Lansing's Oivic Center. Left to right: Floyd Fitzgerald, Jim Simpson, The Right Answer Ernie Terrell Convinced He Has Solution For Claim by Cassius He's a One-Armed Bandit being switched to a two-day affair. All preliminaries this year will be held Friday afternoon (Feb.

24) in Kalamazoo. The qualifiers will return Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) with the first finals event slated at 2 p.m. By holding the finals in the afternoon, the big event will not be competing with Saturday night sports action. Also, newspapers in the Six-A coverage area will have plenty of time to give the finals a spread in Sunday editions.

Vogel explained the two-day Six-A meet setup this way: "I'm sure everyone will like the idea. Under a one day set up, swimmers and fans alike put in an awful long day. Under the two-day setup, I'm sure you will see better performances because qualifiers will have more time to rest and get ready for the finals." Vogel also likes the change from 8-4 to 7-0 in point scoring for the two relay events in dual meets. He said that Michigan is the only state that has not changed to 7-0. Under the 7-0 point system, the relay events become more vital.

If a team sweeps the two relays it will need only 34 points in the nine individual events to win. Under the 8-4 point system, a team that sweeps both relays needs 37 additional points in the nine individual events to achieve victory. Looking at it the other way, if you lost both relays under the 7-0 scoring system you will need 48 points in the 9 individual events to win the meet. You could win all 9 first places in the individual events and still lose the meet. Under the present 8-4 system in the relays, you can lose both relays and still need only 45 points in the 9 individual events to win the meet.

Incidentally, the state meet again will be a one day shot with the following minimum times needed to qualify for the prelims: rell. While never finishing first to earn the checkered flag in USAC racing, Gordon was a fierce competitor. He took a fourth place in the "Indy 500" last Memorial Day. His best finishes were seconds at Trenton, Lang-horne and Milwaukee.

Mechanical trouble kept him out of the International 500 in Tokyo late in 1966 and a crash knocked him from competition in the Phoenix 200, the last race of the season. His total winnings for his sponsor was $40,066.59 which is split on arrangement. He drives the W. W. Enterprises Special.

For his third place finish behind the No. 1 man, Mario An- dretti, and the No. 2 finisher Jim McElreath, Gordon picked up $2,558.78 from USAC. Gordon also races stocks, but he has not been as successful in this field compared to the tougher championship grind. But Barry scored 109 points in four games and increased his bulge over runner-up Robertson by five. The Warriors' forward has hit for 1,421 points in 38 starts while Cincinnati's back-court ace has 1,057 in two less games. Philadelphia's Wilt Chamberlain, the only other scorer, also went over the 1,000 mark in rebounds, grabbing 128 in five games last week for a total of 1,051. Chamberlain leads the pack in field goal percentage as well, having connected on 68 per cent of his shots from the floor.
