eventually prove to be the first step toward a general releas ing from bondage of all base bal players You know of course that base ball players arc the nearest things we have to slaves in this country They don't reach their owners in clanking chains after a hot and dismal crossing in hold of a ship but once delivered they be come vassals of their masters and can be traded and sold about as it they were dipnb animals The fact that some of them are dumb animals doesn't alter the unfait ness of their treatment I have no doubt but that some of the free thinkers among the (layers will seek means to capital ize on the not quite week old edict of Judge Landis They are cer tain to see it as the first exposure of a chink in the armor of the own ers and attempt to do something ibout it They also will draw courage and confidence from the fact that baseball's highest power is interested in seeing to it that the players get an even break from the operating powers I never have seen a standard baseball contract (few laymen ever have for that matter) but from what I can gather it must be more binding than a trunkful ot mustard plasters and as hard to break as a Mississippi rousta bout's skull It must be a one sided instrument too as one sided as a blackboard because I never heard of a player who had any success marked or otherwise in trying to clutches Once a that club can Dutch playing rights when he asked for the contract shortly before the Lions Rams met in Cleveland Dutch wants his release and I hope he doesn't ready to give it to him" Potsy said just as Lou Gehrig was given a permanent place on the Yankee roster like to see Dutch keep his number seven jersey and the number one spot on the Detroit Lions roster in which he led the boys to their only league title and twice led the league in scoring sentiment's sake we want to see him close his active career as a player on another team We intend to recall him and I think he intends to resume a player's role if he were released But we'd like to be able to call Dutch back in 1960 and put him in that number seven jersey just for old There was a less sentimental note in the mopping up operations in answer to
