State never did get going after that, as Tom Schoen intercepted two of Raye passes and the MSU rushing game was stopped cold.

One of the passes gave the Irish the ball on the State 18. Here, the Spartan defense arose to its greatest heights of the game and shoved the Irish back to its 24. Azzaro tried a field goal from the 31-yard line but it just sailed to the right. There were no other scoring chances the rest of the game and the many writers among the press box crew of 735 persons, were left with writing up a tie game and trying to figure out just who is No. 1 in the nation.

State could do no better. But late in the quarter, State started from its own 27-yard line. On the first play, Raye threw a "bomb" to end Gene Washington who had outraced the Irish secondary and just caught the ball in his outstretched hands for 42 yards on the 21. On a key play, Raye sneaked for a first down on fourth and inches at the 22. At the start of the second quarter, Cavender made 10 at left tackle putting 'the ball on the nine.

He then went to the four through the same hole and after Jones was stopped at the line, Cavender went through a hole at right tackle for the score. Kenney converted. Kenney Connects Later, State took over on its 19. Raye went right end 30 yards, getting a key block from Jones, to the 49. Dwight Lee then crashed right end for 14 to the 37.

The attack bogged down until Raye passed to Washington for 17 yards. MSU couldn't advance farther than the 25 and on fourth down, Kenney came in, and with the ball on the 37-yard line, booted his 47-yard field goal. It was right after this that Notre Dame charged back with its score. Steve Quinn took the kickoff and made a beautiful re turn of 38 yards to the Irish 46. O'Brien passed to Gladieux for 11 yards and then to Bleier for nine.

On the next play, Gladieux got past the MSU secondary just far enough to take O'Brien's pass on the goal line and go in to score. Azzaro kicked the extra point for a 10-7 score. Neither team could muster anything and both seemed content to go in with a 10-7 score. Tough Last Half Both teams had records of be ing strong second-half clubs They may have been waiting for the explosion that was expected. But the best either could do in the way of scoring was the three-pointer by the Irish which tied things up.

State found itself deep in its own territory much of the time in the second half. Although the Spartans could move out of danger at times, they couldn't penetrate the Irish defenses once they got the ball in field posi tion. At the start, Jess Phillips made a fine save with a pass interception on the two-yard line after Notre Dame's John Horney had recovered Raye's fumble on the MSU 31. Irish Hold Later in the quarter, State was deep on its own five when Raye passed to Washington 41 yards to the 46. The big end had made a diving catch.

But after that, Notre Dame held' again. Late in the third period, Notre Dame started to move from its 20.
