The Michigan State women's golf team is currently in seventh place at the Lady Paladin Invitational. The Spartans shot a two round score of 614. Auburn leads with a total of 599. Michigan State was led by Emily Bastel, who shot a 73, tying for fifth place.

Stacy Snider shot a 75 for the Spartans, Sarah Martin a 75 and Allison Fouch finished with 78. The tournament will resume today at 8 a.m. Women swimmers win, men fall YPSILANTI The Michigan State women's swim team defeated Eastern Michigan 148-93 on Friday. Jen Windstein, Katie Duncombe and Ildiko Szekely all took first place for the Spartans. Windstein won the 1000 freestyle (10:14.4) and the 500 freestyle Duncombe won the 200 individual medly (2:06.82) and the 200 backstroke Szekely placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:03.22) and the 200 freestyle The men lost their season opener 163.5-79.5 to East-' em Michigan.

Three Spartans took first place. Joe Brennan won the 500 freestyle Scott Schafer won the 200 freestyle (1:43.98) and Justin Laskowski was the top diver with a score of 250.35. The men return to action on Friday against Georgia and the women will face Ball State on Thursday. Formanczyk, doubles eliminated EAST LANSING Michigan State freshman Andrew Formanczyk was defeated by Brian Wilson of Illinois 6-4, 6-3 Saturday in the Omni Hotels Region IV Tennis Championships at Michigan State's Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartan's doubles team of juniors Adam Hourani of Lansing and Jimmy McGuire were beaten by Ball State's ason Pressel and Michael Westerhof 8-1.

Formanczyk won his first round match Friday over Purdue's Sounak Chatterjee 6-0, 6-1. Tournament play continues at 9 a.m. Sunday at Michigan State's Indoor Tennis Facility. Elsewhere Biffle holds off Green for victory AVONDALE, Ariz. Greg Biffle came back from nearly two laps down to earn his fifth Busch Series victory of the season Saturday in the Outback Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Biffle, the top rookie in the stock car series and a former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, came up with his second win on the mile oval in two days. He also won the truck race Friday. A cut right front tire on lap 69 of the 200-lap race left Biffle more than a lap behind the leaders in 37th place, but he was able to charge throgh the field and get ck on the lead lap during a caution period after Larry i'oyt crashed on lap 112. Moreno earns 100th career pole SURFERS PARADISE, Australia With no guaranteed ride next season, Roberto Moreno is driving for his CART career. The pressure wasn't showing Saturday when the 42-year-old Brazilian qualified first for Sunday's Honda Indy 300.

Moreno, fighting for a spot on the Patrick Racing team next season, drove his Toyota Reynard around the 2.75-mile Surfers Paradise street course in 1 minute, 32.095 seconds, clinching his 100th career CART pole. "Although I'm getting old, I still have a young spirit," Moreno said after averaging 109.257 mph. Tm still up to the check." It is Moreno's second career pole. He was the fastest qualifier at Cleveland last year and won at Vancouver this year. GU de Ferran, who can clinch the season championship with a strong finish Sunday, was second-fastest in 1:32.406.

De Ferran, who had problems with the gearbox in his main car and had to qualify his backup, leads second-placed Kenny Brack by 26 points with two races left.
