Wl THE STATE JOURNAL Apr. 1, 1973 F-3 Organists to Meet Episcopal Prayer Book Revision Meets Opposition, Indifference adoption, the commission has decided, will offer two forms for most rites, leaving it to the individual congregation to select its preference. Defenders of the tradition al language insist that most Episcopalians will stick to the older form.

But the accuracy of such predictions will not be ascertainable for a number of years to come. The Rev. Dr. Truman Morrison, pastor of Edgewood United Church, East Lansing, will address an open meeting of the Lansing Chapter of the American Guild of Organists at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Scheduled at All Saints Episcopal Church, 800 Abbott, East Lansing, the meeting is open to all clergymen, organists, choir directors, choir members as well as church members. DR. MORRISON'S topic will 'Trends in Contemporary Worship: A Philosophy for Evaluation' Different elements which contribute to liturgy, including music, will be discussed. Frank Frick, chairman of the Religion Department, Albion College, Albion. ft) 1 mm Wi v' Male Choir Slated For Two Concerts 1 By WILLIAM R. MACKAYE (C) lt73, Th. Washinstoa Ptst WASHINGTON The Episcopal Church's effort to revise Hs Book of Common Prayer, a task not expected to be complete before 1979, is proving to be a bitterly painful endeavor to many of the church's Members. Much of the pain of the pro-Cess to the church's rank-and-file members, oddly enough, appears to be a direct consequence of the determination of Episcopal leaders that the rank and file play a part in the revising.

AMERICAN EPISCOPALIANS have three timrs previously reformed the Book of Common Prayer that they inherited from the Church of England in 1789 when the American church was organized, at the end of the 19th century and most recently, in 1928. But on all three occasions the work was done by small committees and imposed on the church as a fait accompli. This time around, however, the church's experts on worship said they wanted to revise the church's rites on the basis of actual testing of proposed changes. The testing began in 1967 and in the ensuing years has won some enthusiastic participation. It has also won yawns of in 168,000 of your friends and neighbors will watch The singers will present a variety of musical styles ranging from heavy classical hymns to the light contemporary music of today.

COMPRISING THE choir are 20 young men who are studying to be ministers, and four young women who accompany them on various instruments. The group is currently on its spring tour. Both of these services are open to the public, according to the Rev. Otto Wegner, pastor of Calvary Church. "The Gospel Hymns." a male choir representing North Central Bible College, Minneapolis, will make two appearances in the Lansing and Holt area.

Directed by the Rev. Robert Cilke, chairman of the music department of the college, the choir will sing at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 3006 W. Jolly at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The group also will appear at the Assemblies of God monthly youth rally at 7 p.m.

Agency Edward H. Weiss Chicago, III. LTD mn fllMLW difference from many Episcopalians, including clergymen and in some quarters bitter cries that plotters were conniving to abolish the prayer book. WHAT ON the surface would seem to be the most laudable of all the features of the project has stirred the harshest of all reactions. This is the attempt to include Episcopalians in the effort to find agreement among all English-speaking Christians about how such universal prayers as the Lord's Prayer will be recited.

The text of the Lord's prayer hammered out in London in 1969 by representatives of most Christian traditions, from Roman Catholics to Baptists, is, for the moment at least, disliked by almost everyone. (This reaction is by no means restricted to Episcopalians. The proposed new version has been condemned by Christians of a variety of denominations, many of whom appear convinced that the particular English they say is the version written by Jesus him- self. In the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, for example, an official survey indicated that the new text for the Lord's Prayer "met with almost total rejection." A THIRD of the clergy in the Diocese of Washington, which includes Episcopalians in the District of Columbia and the Maryland suburbs, singled out the prayer for similar criticism in their responses to a parallel survey. What was some ways the most striking element of the reports filed by the two dioceses with the national commission superintending the prayer book revision, however, isthat two-thirds of their congregations didn't even bother tol respond to the question-njtfres.

In most cases, of course, that means that the clergymen in- charge of the congregation failed to respond to the survey. YET STUDY of earlier comments from the pew has already led, the revisers to accept a principle that will mean a radical change in the ways of Episcopal worship. These previous responses made clear to the commission that compromise is not possible between those Episcopalians who wish to worship in the traditional 16th century prayer book language and those who prefer their public prayers in modern English.
