T9 David Rolfe jr Psychologist lo Lead Family Life Seminars By SI STEPHENSON Staff Writer "Real love is full of living and dying. It takes the best that a person is because it takes all that a person is." With this proverbial saying displayed in front of the room, the Lansing Catholic Social Services conducts its marriage preparation and enrichment conferences. CALLED PRE-CANA, the program derives its name from the Biblical story of the wedding feast at Cana. While it is compulsory for Catholics planning to get married, Pre-Cana is designed for non-Catholics, as well "and is not skewed one way or the other," says David J. Rolfe, coordinator of agency services.

Rolfe, who holds a master's degree in social work and is working on a PhD in family ecology at Michigan State University, is in charge of the program. ABOUT 500 couples annually attend the Pre-Cana series, which is offered 14 times a year. Couples may attend the two-session conference, or an all-day conference. All-day conferences were held two weeks ago, and the shorter sessions are scheduled for 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and June 17 at Peoples Church, East Lansing.

The two-session conference costs $4. The all-day conference costs $5, which Includes a midday meal. Enrollment is limited to 48 couples. It is preventive in nature, and not designed to solve problems. Pre-Cana assumes couples possess basic information like, "huge debts should be avoided," and "sex should be mutually enjoyable," Rolfe says. The program tries to provide necessary information in small groups, allowing time for discussion.

TRADITIONALLY, SUCH sessions may be "plugging the people full of facts," Rolfe says. "But we use short 10-15 minute talks in groups of four couples." A "facilitator" is in the group, "not as a leader or therapist," Rolfe says, but is merely concerned with the mechanics of the exercises. The purpose of the short talks is to raise questions for the couples to answer by working out a system of their own, "a system that they both have to agree on," says Rolfe. "IT'S NOT merely a matter of reading a book or taking information," he says, "but it's how two people use those facts to function as a system." After the short talks a pencil and paper test about husband-wife roles is given to each couple. Each lists hisher priorities of how the husbandwife should function, and how they feel they themselves should function in a husbandwife role.

Then they compare their lists with one another. 31 by part of the Old Testament. Information, phons 332-8693. 332-0991 FUNDAMENTALIST TERMINOLOGY "Have you let Jesus come into your heart?" "Have you let Jesus into your life?" 1 hese are two current ques- tions asked with the implication that one becomes a Christian bv Jesus come into your heart or into your life Perhaps it will surprise many to know that such terminology is never used in scriptures! I'm sure that Christians mean well in using such approaches but I'm not sure that the humanizing of scriptural truth really conveys what the Bible teaches. Salvation is not received by "letting" Jesus do anything! Salvation is received bv one reaching out by faith and claiming what Jesus Christ has already done. At this time conversion takes place and Christ comes into the body to live by His Holy-Spirit. Now this is not just a matter of semantics.

This may be the very reason why better than 50 per cent of the people who make a profession of Jesus Christ are really never saved. In mass evangelism the ratio of failure is far greater. Maybe it would be ell to get back to talking about trusting Christ for our salvation as the word "faith" implies. One must understand the terms of the Gospel before he can be saved. With anything less than that he remains a still short of salvation.
