Banks Urged Editor State Journal: Will economy break the depression Yes, If applied in the proper place. At present our largest expense Is Interest on money we have spent.

Why not stop the Interest? I do not blame the banks for accepting Interest on money loaned them by the government through the federal reserve system. There Is no necessity in loaning this money to the banks for a half of 1 percent and the people borrow It at a rate of 3 percent. Was It not good money before the banks obtained It? Or have they made any Improvement on it? I say It was good money and the banks have not Improved it. Hence it Is not necessary for the money to go to the banks before it reaches the people. IX one-third of the government expense is Interest, then why not do away with the banks and high Interest rates and make money a medium of exchange only.

Have a government owned bank supplied with plenty of money that is backed by wealth and not by gold as there is not enough of it. Loan it to the people without interest. The money must not be boarded but spent. Money spent means more profits. More business and profits means more men go back to work and the depression is broken, and our government expense will be cut one-third.

March 13, 1933 BEAUTIFICATION OF STREET IN terscctions with Hundreds of Flower Beds Would Help City, Give Jobs, I Better Values Editor State Journal: Being a resident and taxpayer of the city for a number of years, I have naturaiiy lateen a great interest in tne beautlficatlon of our city, and at the present time I am suggesting to you and those in authority that it would be a wonderful plan to start a pro gram of flower bed planting along our i city streets.

I believe that such plan would be a real benefit in that such work could be done at very little expense and provide beauty both to the property and the city as a whole. Such a movement would provide work for a great many men who might well solicit employment from house to house with the idea that a bed could be spaded and fertilized at the expense of (1 to tS according to the size. If the petunia is used as Is suggested we would be insured at least five months bloom, which would be cheaper and superior to the tulip planting pro grams of some other cities. Having traveled through 23 states and having seen the beauty spots in hundreds of our cities throughout the country I feel that this plan in Lan sing might well rival or surpass the planting program of Rochester, N. the tulip program of Pennsylvania: the rose program of Maryland and Virginia: the bougan vlllea of Florida; the pinks, violets, dahlias, lilies and roses of Louisiana; the blue bonnets of Texas; pinks, daffodils, jonquils of Oklahoma and Arkansas; the sunflow, er of Kansas, and the multi-flowered stales of Missouri, Nebraska, and Min nerota.

REDUCTION IN PAYMENTS TO Veterans Stirs Writer to Wonder If Saving Won't Be Lost in Greater Welfare Burden Well, well, now that Czar Roosevelt has declared that the veterans of 1898 will have to prove service-connected disability it is very evident that big business has at last reached his ear, After 35 years of struggle, when the average veteran of the Hlspano American war Is 60 years of age, when his little pension Is a real god-send to him in the present economic condition, he must go back over a generation of time to prove that he deserved his little $40 or $50 per month. Of course, he can't do that for the records of that war were kept by raw recruits under the supervision of men who knew very little about army rec ords. Most of his buddies have passed out of this world (they are dying at the rate of 500 per month) Altogether the Spanish war vet is surely going to get what he voted for, a great big change.

This applies also to the World war veteran for the burden of the proof Is going to be put up to him also and thus the democratic administration will save the country 500 millions. Those old veterans of 35 years ago are too old to go out and get a Job or position and the consequence will be the added burden of all these men (and widows of veterans, too) on the community or county. Meanwhile how much does the new czar deduct from big business to save the nation? Will he take General Pershing's $21,000 per year away from him? Will he deprive Admiral Moffatt of his per year, or Admiral Bird of his Of course, that 15 percent cut on congressmen's salaries will be a terrible blow to them but the men who faced shot and shell, privation, disease, and death can get along without that pen sion. I wonder how many soldier votes Roosevelt will get In 1936. H.

England has reduced the value of the pound about one-third, Canada and New Zealand have followed her lead all with profit to themselves. We do not need to ask the opinion or consent of any other country or wait for an international monetary conference to tell us what to do.

Whatever the unit of value it should be stabilized to keep It on a level with the average price of all products at all times. 'There should be some authority to regulate the value of money to cor respond with commodity prices. This would at times necessitate in creasing or decreasing the amount of gold in the dollar. In normal times the variation would be slight, but in a time of crisis it would prevent a catastrophe like the one we are now experiencing. Money is usually defined as a me.

If all the boys were getting a square deal from the soldiers' and sailors' relief I don't think it would be necessary for the chairman to go Into your columns. When the former chairman was handling the work we all got a square deal. He didn't let his friends have help at the expense of others.

I don't know what he received but I do know If we were soldiers, sailors and served In the World war we got something to eat and not a lot of exercises. I think Judge McArthur would do the soldiers and sailors a good turn If he appointed another chairman. I have a lot more to say but I get so mad I cant think of it, but I do think M. H. has said all he can.

WARMEST WORDS OF PRAISE Spoken for Treatment and Service Received at Hands of Soldiers-Sailors Relief Commission Editor Stats Journal: In two letters in your paper of recent date the soldiers and sailors relief and Merle Hopper have received some undue criticism. I am one- of the unfortunates who have had to ask for assistance.

Until about 15 months ago I had never met Mr. Hopper so I think I am only one of the rank and file and in position to say that I believe if you are fair with him there would be no need for criticism. Mr. Hopper has a position that at times would tax the patience of anyone. We will grant at- times he Is a little gruff and outspoken.

Mr. Hopper Is restricted as to who is entitled to relief and who Is not and'l do not think anyone can truthfully say they did not get help if they were in need and entitled to it from this agency. It seems that if people were going to tell a story they should show both sides. I don't believe the man lives who could satisfy everyone. Some people seem to think because the are not having to pay for the things they receive they should get everything they ask for.

But it always came forth fresh and blooming because it was backed by the faith of millions of honest people. But on March 4 a wonderful mind with a vision untarnished by the greed of personal gain gazed upon this tree with a prayer in his heart and said it is not dead but only wilted from abuse and lack of care. He finds it is starved from lack of currency fertilizer.

He finds some or this fertilizer In the house but It was locked up in a large steel box. He also finds a large amount locked up in simuar noxes in different parts of the country, Inspired by greed rather than love of country. He finds the tree was doped with mortgages and interest. He finds where the moratorium has cut off all one side of the tree from all hope of further currency fertilizer which was promised by his neighbors across the pond. He sees thousands of things on the tree which he thinks are lice but finds they are only high salaried officials cutting a large dltlclency in the limbs.

It seems they got perched on the tree when it was blooming and some one forgot to take them off when the blossoms begun to fall. Being a man of action he grabs the currency fertilizer and applies a liberal supply to the roots and soon the rain ot public faith begins to come; then our first little bud. We expect when he has cut off the graft from the limbs and made safe the millions of little homes that the tree will grow Urge and beautiful, filled with flowers and bearing fruit. But always keep the Insecticide which about 2.400 are useable. I' be lieve the city might well co-operate with the property owners In planting not only the remaining intersections but in starting a movement to slimu late property plantings along the boulevards.

As poor as we are I be Ileve there would be but few who could not spare a few pennies for seeds or plants and do a little digging lor real "City Beautiful." If this program is a success, and It will be If The State Journal and city bodies co-operate, our mayor could in vite officials from all neighboring cities and towns to visit us that they. too, might enjoy the beauty spots which the city streets would provide. HINTS ECONOMY NECESSARY IN Private Pay Roils Hasn't Been Passed on to Higher Salaries in City Government Editor State Journal: While everybody in Lansing is trying hard to get enough to cat and wear and while factory workers and clerks are working part time and for very small wages and while all busl ness people lie awake to figure out how they can keep going and all the time coiner lntn debt, all this time the mayor and council members keep right on paying high salaries regardless of the ability of taxpayers to pay. The people who pay the bills have a right to know what is done with their money and the following are some of the salaries being paid per year: city clerk, 83.600; park commis sioncr, engineer, city attorney. 14.300; fire chief. $3,600 thief of police, Otto Eckert, $9,000, and a number of others above $2,500.

Many receive under $2,000 per year such as firemen and police men and It costs Just as much for them to live as anybody else. It would be a good thing If the council would publish in your paper the amount of money the different city officials get and nobody would object to the cost for getting this information.
