Quantrill played at Okemos from 1984-86, before moving on to the University of Wisconsin. After leaving Wisconsin, Quantrill was the Red Sox sixth round pick in the 1989 June draft. He played for the Red Sox farm teams in Gulf Coast and Elmira in 1989, and Winter Haven and the double-A club in New Britain in 1990. Quantrill had a 7-1 1 record in New Britain in 1990, and a 2-1 mark in 1991 before being called up to Pawtucket last May.

He posted a 10-7 record for Pawtucket in 1991, with a 4.45 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 155 innings pitched. The only other current major leaguer with a mid-Michigan background is John Smoltz, a Waverly High School graduate who is a member of the Atlanta Braves' starting rotation, and a two-time National League All-Star. yet. "I've been running around so much in the past couple of days, that it just hasn't sunk in yet," he said from his hotel room in Kansas City. "When I get a couple of days off sometime, it'll probably hit me then." sometime, it'll probably hit me then." Quantrill said he will be used as a reliever and a spot starter for the Red Sox.

"I can do both, which really helps the team," he said. "It really depends on what they need, how the other pitchers do, as to what I'll be doing." The Red Sox sent down pitcher Mike Gardiner to make room for Quantrill. Gardiner was 3-10 with a 5.06 earned run average this season. Quantrill had posted a 6-8 record at Pawtucket this season, with a 4.46 ERA in 19 games. He led Pawtucket in games started (18), innings pitched (119), and hits (143), and was tied for the lead in strikeouts (56), while issuing just 20 walks.

Quantrill said he isn't sure how long he'll be in the majors.

"Right now, it's just for an indefinite period," he said. "They sent Gardiner down, so it's not just while someone's on the disabled list, but you really never Quantrill, 23, a right-handed pitcher, had been with the Red Sox' Triple A farm club in Pawtucket for the first part of this season. "I think it's a difficult thing for managers, coaches and players if the manager is sitting on a one-year contract and it goes through the end of the season, whether he's fired or rehired," he said. "It's a natural thing that there are a lot of questions by the players in the clubhouse.

I think this settles everything down," Fregosi said. Esaslcy available cheap: Nick Esasky said it was time to see what was out there. He's sorry he had to tell the Atlanta Braves to release him last week, but he didn't believe that sticking it out with the club's Richmond farm team would help his career. "I want a major league job," Esasky said. "I don't have anything against the Braves, there are no bad feelings.

I think what I did is best for all concerned. I want to see what is out there." Esasky had just joined the Braves under a $5.6 million, three-year contract in 1989 when he contracted vertigo, a bizarre neurological condition that causes dizziness. He played just nine games. After he recovered this spring, the Braves sent him to Richmond of the Class AAA International League. The team agreed in June to either release Esasky or bring him to Atlanta by last week.

Esasky said he doesn't know if any other teams are interested in him. But he would be a cheap acquisition. The Braves have to pick up all but $60,000 of his $1.95 million 1992 salary. (Grace). WP-Dfcbte.
