10 A Iowa City Press-Citizen Thursday, June 9, 1983 i wints to rent Fire forces 3,000 out of Carnegie Hall NEW YORK (AP) A smoky fire broke out in a basement area of Carnegie Hall this morning, forcing evacuation of 3,000 people including Mayor Edward Koch who were attending graduation ceremonies. No injuries were immediately reported. A spoksewoman at the building said she believed the fire was under control shortly before 11 a.m. Koch had been scheduled to address the commencement ceremonies of Polytechnic Institute of New York. Continued from page 1A Mahon said UI would like to rent the library for two years, with an option to rent for two more years.

By then, space needs will diminish because enrollment is expected to decline and because several campus buildings now under construction will be ready for occupancy, she said. Although a final agreement hasn't been reached, Mahon told the regents that the rent would be about $1 per square foot on an annual basis. The building has about 27,000 square feet. Glasgow, asked if the $1 rental figure was low for downtown space, replied, "Sure is." But he said that if UI spent money on repairs and renovation, the rental fee could be less than $5 a square foot. In January, Glasgow and his partners, Joseph Glasgow and Allen Wolfe, bought the 80-year-old library from the city for $165,000.

Glasgow said his group has until next January to decide whether to buy a 78-space parking lot behind the building for $205,000. Glasgow said today that plans to renovate the space for offices have been abandoned for now. "Most fell through when we couldn't give them (immediate) parking," he said. "Everything we had planned went down the drain." Mahon said UI officials contacted Glasgow's group when it became apparent UI could not get a commitment to rent space at Central Junior High School for this fall. The school, now closed, is the focus of an ownership dispute between the city and the Iowa City School District.

UI wants take over the library on July 1 so renovation work can be completed before the fall semester begins. "That would be a good use for (the building)," Glasgow said. "If we can help out the university, that's our aim. It's the biggest industry in town." Neuhauser, though disappointed with the prospect, said she'd rather see the building used than sit idle. "As far as I know, there's nothing the city can do to stop them," she said.
