Snorts C-2 Battle Creek Enquirer, Sept. 27, 1983 IPDnBDop Panthers 5th in poll Pennfield High (8-0), an honorable mention choice last week, is fifth in Class in this week's Michigan High School Girls' Basketball Coaches' Poll. Marshall (4-0), fourth a week ago in Class slipped to fifth. Hastings (7-0), 10th last week, gained only honorable mention this week. Other area teams gaining honorable mention were Homer (4-1) in Class and Mendon(4-l)inD.

Colon (6-0) remained second in Class D. Pennfield High is in the driver's seat in the SMAA today, thanks to a strong second half Monday night against St. Philip. The Panthers rallied from a 24-22 halftime deficit to beat the visiting Tigers, 58-53, and remain unbeaten through eight games, including four against league rivals. St.

Philip (3-4) fell to third place in the league at 2-1, one-half game behind Olivet. The Tigers led the Panthers, 45-44, in the fourth quarter, but Pennfield scored 13 of the next 15 points to open a 56-47 bulge. The Panthers made 10 of 13 free throws in the final period and 16 of 24 in the game. The Tigers were 15 record 36 points by making 16 of 22 shots from the field and 4 of 8 from the line. She also had 11 rebounds.

Missy Langridge added 18 points, 7 assists and 6 steals for Tekonsha, which shot 61 percent from the field (26 of 43). Wendy Parker paced Springfield with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Lisa Brooks contributed 10 points. Judy Jaffke had nine rebounds and Lori Shipman eight. Olivet 42, Maple Valley 29: Sophomore Karyn Kuerbitz tossed in 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Eagles (4-3, 3-1 SMAA) beat the Lions (2-4, 0-3) Deb Fitz added 10 points for Olivet.

Duska Morawski led Maple Valley with nine. Pennfield gained some support but remains fifth in Class in this week's Associated Press high school football poll. The Panthers received 53 points in balloting among sportswriters and broadcasters from throughout the state, 7 points more than a week ago, but stayed in fifth place. Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport, fourth a week ago, vaulted into first place with 66 points. Berrien Springs rose from third to second, with 62; Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, from eighth to third, with 60; and Pontiac Catholic, from a tie for 18th to fourth, with 57. Lakeview fell from third to llth in Class following its loss to St.

PRO FOOTBALL DON SHULA, Miami Dolphins coach, told the Miami News he was offered $1 million a year to become coach of the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. Iowa moved up from seventh to fourth after beating Ohio State, which dropped from third to eighth. Nebraska was a unanimous No. 1, Texas remained No. 2 and Arizona advanced from fourth to third.

After Iowa, the rest of the Top Ten consists, in order, of North Carolina, Alabama, West Virginia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Auburn.
